As the heat of the summer cools down and the kids in the United States are going back to school, it has been revealed that plans are being worked on for the world’s largest indoor ski resort.
The plans are being spearheaded by KOP Limited based out of Singapore and once completed will be managed by Majid Al Futtaim, an operator of malls and leisure spots based out of the Middle East but operates in Africa as well. This would be their first project outside the Middle East or Africa that they would undertake and they are going big.
Wintastar Shanghai, our first expansion into #China, will be the world’s largest indoor ski and snow entertainment facility! It will provide the people of China year-round access to the largest indoor Olympic-grade winter sports facility. #GreatMoments https://t.co/uM4iXK3aar
The park, called Wintastar Shanghai, is planned to be BIG. The size is estimated to be nearly 1 million square feet! That size would easily put it as the largest indoor ski resort ever. To put it in some comparison, the current holder of the title of World’s Largest Ski Resort is Harbin Wanda Indoor Ski and Winter Sports Resort in Northern China. Wintastar Shanghai is estimated to be three times bigger when completed.
Wintastar Shanghai is planned to have three full-sized ski slopes including one designed specifically for Olympic training. It will also boast 25 other attractions for those who don’t wish to ski but just want to play in the snow. No specifics have been announced but that is one heck of a place to build a snowman! I don’t know what the food situation will be at the Wintastar but I would guess the hot cocoa would be pretty good too.
Majid Al Futtaim holds the distinction of launching the first Ski resort in Africa with Ski Egypt in 2017.
اهلاً بكم في Ski Egypt ..
They are also working on Ski Saudi, a winter park in Oman and a snow park for the planned Reem Mall in Abu Dhabi So while this will be their first venture outside of Africa or the Middle East, they have got some experience in ski parks and resorts.
KOP Limited Chairman Ong Chih Ching said of the venture: ” Majid Al Futtaim’s impeccable track record will help bolster Wintastar Shanghai’s vision to bring world-class, hi-tech and safe indoor skiing and snow play into China. As a Singaporean company familiar with the Chinese culture, combined with our international track record and reputation in developing new-to-market concepts, we hope to work with Majid Al Futtaim and other foreign partners to deliver new experiences to Chinese consumers.”
No timetable for the opening of the new resort has been announced yet, but with the Winter Olympics to be held in February of 2022 at Shanghai, it would be expected the resort would be finished the construction by then. While Majid Al Futtaim has not been announced as a sponsor of those Games, it would be expected that the Games would make a great platform to focus on the new resort and spotlight it for all those visiting China for the Games or watching the events on TV or the internet.
With news like this and other snow parks opening up around the world, place and weather seem less of a concern if you want to go skiing now. The image of shivering away in some high altitude mountainous ski lodge in the northern United States or the Alps in Europe is giving way to large resorts placed in the Middle East or Africa now. It is a sign of the present and future changing but also the amounts of money that are being put into places like these all around the world.
