Boxing desperately needed a great fight last night to gain back popularity that it’s lost over the years. But what happened just after the fight may be one of the biggest sports controversies of all time.
Fighting in his home country, Australia’s Jeff Horn stunned Filipino Manny Pacquiao in a bloody Brisbane battle to claim a unanimous 12-round decision and win the WBO world welterweight title in front of 50,000 fans at Lang Park on Sunday.
Horn remains unbeaten
The unheralded 29-year-old former schoolteacher, who improved his record to 17-0-1, was awarded the win over the eight-division world champion by scores of 117-111, 115-113 and 115-113.
Manny Pacquiao’s best days are certainly behind him – that much we found out last night. But he should’ve been good enough to walk away with the victory and he didn’t. You see, Horn was a huge underdog and didn’t get much respect going into the fight.
And if you look at both fighters faces after the fight, you would have easily said Pacquiao had won. But Horn claimed a controversial victory that set the boxing world alight. Hello controversy.
Boxing fans slam judges after Pacquiao was ‘robbed’
Former Heavyweight Champ Lennox Lewis was among the first to speak out:
Wow! PAC loses by UD? One judge had it 117-111?
This is what’s wrong with boxing. Horn was very game but I’m hard pressed to see how he could have won that fight by any stretch! #PacHorn
This controversy is not going to help the sport of boxing whatsoever. Manny Pacquiao losing is why boxing is such a joke. People have given up hope on taking boxing seriously and how can you not blame them. Jeff Horn did not win that fight last night, sorry.
