#1 Sleep

Did you know that even one poor night’s sleep can depress your immune system functioning by up to 30 percent? When you feel any kind of illness coming on, its important to get as much rest as possible. Every individual differs, some may need their full 8 Hours and some may need less. Lack of sleep can affect your immune system. Studies show that people who don't get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus, such as a common cold virus. 

#2 Lose the Booze

We all know that parties and college go side by side- Tailgating, frat parties and good old celebrations. But did you know that you're just prolonging that stubborn cold? Parties and drinking are often associated with staying up late and lack of sleep. Alcohol is also very dehydrating, so you risk becoming quite dehydrated from the combination of the illness and the alcohol. Second, as part of treating your sore throat or cold you may be taking other medications, such as over the counter medications, that could interact with the alcohol.

#3 Cold Buster Tea

Hydrate your body with good nutrients! This Concation can help boost your immune system and kick that cold. You can also use your favorite tea along with these ingredients. 

  • 1 Lemons, sliced

Combine hot water and apple cider vinegar in a small glass or mug. Add honey and cayenne pepper. Stir well. Top off with a squeeze of lemon.

Unfortunately, people don’t wash their hands frequently or adequately enough to successfully fight back against cold and flu infections. According to a study done by Michigan State University, only 5 percent of people wash their hands correctly, leaving 95 percent cutting corners when it comes to preventing the spread of infections.  Umm.. GROSS

#6 Clean your Cell Phone

Cell phones hold more germs/bacteria than toilet seats... if that doesn't get your attention I don't know what will. We set our phone down on everything Desks, bathrooms and even doctor offices. Make sure to give your phone a good clean every so often to stop the spread of germs. 

How to clean it: Use a combination of 60% water and 40% rubbing alcohol, Mix the ingredients together, and then dip a cloth in the solution before wiping it gently across your phone. Unless you’re sick, doing this a few times each month is plenty

#7 Take your Vitamins

ECHINACEA: Echinacea contains phytochemicals called alkylamides, which are thought to stimulate the body’s natural immune system.

ZINC: Laboratory studies have found it can inhibit replication of the rhinovirus, the most frequent cause of cold symptoms. 

VITAMIN C:  prevention during periods of intense exercise and stress and especially for treatment along with conventional cold and flu medicines.

#8 Eat Healthy Foods

You may think its hard to eat healthy on a regular basis, but eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables supports your immune system. And... it's a lot easier than fighting off the flu. 

Top Foods: Leafy Greens, Apples, Citrus Fruits, Spinach, Sweet Potatoes, Lean Turkey and Yogurt... and there are many more, so if you're a picky eater you still have options! 

#9 Sweat Out Those Toxins

Physical activity helps flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. This may reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness. even 30 minutes a day can help improve your overall wellbeing Physically and mentally. Working out can help reduce stress and anxiety which are two leading causes of common colds. 

#10 Keep Your Surroundings Clean

Keeping your environment clean—whether at home, work or school —is an important way to prevent cold and flu. Germs can take up residence anywhere. By keeping them to a minimum, you will reduce your chances of developing an infection and improve your health.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces on a regular basis. Establish a schedule for daily and weekly cleaning and disinfection activities based on the location and level of contamination. Clean more often when there are sick  members.
  • Avoid clutter to limit areas where dust and dirt can collect.
  • Organize your cleaning supplies in one area so they are easy to find.
