News alerts driving you to the brink? You’re not alone.
For wide swath of Americans, the pace is migraine-inducing. There’s President Trump’s record-low job approval rating after his first 100 days in office, North Korea, the congressional inquiry into Russia and failed health care overhaul. It’s all ushered in an age of soothing TV, aka completely apolitical programming which serves as a tonic to the day’s stresses.
Everyone has a go-to digital nightcap. Even celebrities. Here’s what they watch.
Ana Gasteyer: “I’ve been watching anything on Netflix in a foreign language. Because then I can’t look at my phone because I have to read subtitles. There’s a Parisian procedural called Spiral.”

Katherine Heigl: “I watch a lot. Modern Family. I really enjoy Mom. I love to laugh. I’m loving Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix. I just try to watch comedies, honestly, and I’ve stopped looking at my newsfeed. I’d be nursing the baby, looking through just the bleakest stuff, and I went, ‘This is not healthy.’ … I’m consciously choosing to be uninformed.”
Amy Schumer: “The Great British Bake Off. I fall in love with the contestants. They’re so sweet and they love baking. It’s nice to see some sweet humanity and people kind of rooting for each other.”
Kevin Bacon: “I don’t watch news after PBS NewsHour. … My wife (Kyra Sedgwick) and I got hooked on it a few years ago. And then after that’s over, I’m done for the night. We have some shows that we like, that we share. We love things like The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones. We both agree on The Crown. We liked Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.”

Goldie Hawn: “I’m reading Alexander Hamilton right now. I love historical books.” Her longtime partner Kurt Russell likes old movies. “The other night, we saw (1943’s) The Song of Bernadette. I gave him my reading time. It was just black and white, beautiful. And we watched it with the fire going. It was a wonderful way to come down.”
Nicole Richie: “I watch shows about the universe. I love them. There’s one called How the Universe Works. And then I watch StarTalk sometimes, but that’s more of a sitdown with Neil deGrasse Tyson and two other people. I like ones that take you out there. It’s like watching magic.”
Tina Fey: “I like (a local program called) Open House NYC, where they just show apartments that are for sale in your area.”
Rob Delaney: “I don’t need to be soothed, personally, before I go to bed. I liked to have my imagination engaged. The OA I really enjoyed, because I would go to bed and have crazy dreams! I also read a couple books by Michel Faber recently, I would read those before I would go to bed. I like to get my mind all stirred up before I go to sleep and then figure things out in dreams, or try to.”
Tegan (of Tegan and Sara): “I like Chef’s Table, it’s beautiful. I feel like I’m learning something. I think turning your brain off is OK. I say that to our audience all the time. We want people to come into the venue and have a great time. We try not to be overly political or heavy, because I think entertainment and having some fresh relief and self-care is really important. And wine.”
Sara: “Really, we’ll watch anything if there’s wine involved.”
