I’m a big animation fan. I have been for a long time. Animated offerings in the United States have been around for a long time too, even if they weren’t made in the United States. I’m from a generation that has memories of Saturday Morning cartoons and remembers when animations blocks were just coming to that thing called Cable TV. In that time a lot of ideas have come along that someone thought was going to be “the next big thing” and make lots of money. Not all of them did. One of those ideas that have happened many times before is taking things to the big screen and having an actual movie that was released in theaters. The latest idea to go to theaters is Teen Titans Go!. A Cartoon Network idea that they are now taking to the big screen.
But is that an idea that people really want?
It seems crazy that the people who come up with these ideas wouldn’t want it. That is an ultimate idea for a creation that moviegoers will go see it and not only will a creator make lots of money from all those people, but it is the next step in making that idea live on forever in cinematic history.
But history isn’t always the kindest to animated properties going to the Silver Screen.
For many of us fans of television animation going to the big screen, the prime example we start with is the Hasbro movies of the mid-80s, Gi Joe, Transformers, and My Little Pony. Three big popular toy properties for the company. The idea was that if Hasbro were going to make big hits on the movie screens, it would be them. It didn’t turn out that way.
A few years later came the idea of taking an older property like The Jetsons, and make a movie out of that. There was a lot of attention to the Jetsons movie at the time. There weren’t too many sequels either.
This isn’t even the first time that a Cartoon Network idea has gone Hollywood. A few years back people may remember the idea of having a Powerpuff Girls movie that was advertised to death on Cartoon Network. The results weren’t favorable for them either. So what is the problem?
The big thought that comes to mind is “why would I pay money to see something I can watch for free?” is the big one. Teen Titans Go! is a series that Cartoon Network shows quite a lot on TV. It is something that comes airs many times a day. Why would anyone want to pay a movie theaters price for the same thing? Is the movie going to do something that people want to pay money for? Teen Titans Go! doesn’t seem like that kind of TV show.
Speaking of money, is Cartoon Network putting up the “movie budget” we hear a lot about when a movie is released? Cartoon Network is known by those who watch it that their budgets aren’t big to begin with. They don’t like to spend a lot of money on the stuff they show on their network. If they are bringing that to a theater, I’d not want to spend a lot of money on that. Especially in the modern day with all the ways a property like that brings in money.
And that can count against them as well. If you look around to things on TV for free, DVD releases, the price to buy DVDs, streaming, plus the prices that a lot of theaters charge to even see a movie anymore. What is Cartoon Network expecting to make back from a TV property that is aimed at younger children?
Going from television in the modern climate is a big risk, one that their predecessor didn’t even make. So if it will succeed or not is in Cartoon Network’s eyes as to what they want to accomplish with a Teen Titans Go! movie and how much of that do they have to achieve to make it worth everyone’s while.
We shall see what happens.
