Working in the medical field means that your main focus should be on your patients. It sounds pretty straight forward, but it actually is fairly complicated. With picot question ideas, you are able to identify the issue and come up with a solution. Most nurses are properly educated on how to ask these PICO questions. When you are just starting out, this may take a little more practice. These 7 steps will help serve as a guide.
One of the easiest ways to come up with winning PICO questions is to know as much detail as possible. The patient will often want to describe their symptoms to you. If you are doing this as a test, you need to read all the presented information. Most of your questions will come from what is already presented.
Feel free to ask follow-up questions if you are unsure. There is never any harm done in gathering more information. Some students and qualified nurses see this as a challenge to their knowledge, but it is not true. To come up with some types of picot questions, you need to ask for more than what is already presented.
Take it upon yourself to do adequate research. It may not seem like this would be part of a nurse’s job, but you would be surprised how much of research is connected with nursing. There is not a person in the world who knows everything about the medical field. You learn as you go along.
Create a few steps for yourself. Even if you are just dealing with identifying the problem first, break that down even further. It is an opportunity to see how much you can know about the condition. This is also going to help you come up with the rest of the questions going forward.
5. Create alternatives
This is a huge part of PICOT nursing questions and should be taken seriously. There is no one solution to a problem. If the initial idea fails, what would your next steps be? Start by making a list and then you can eliminate the ones that do not make sense.
6. Best case scenario
Come up with a solution that would be the best-case scenario for the patient. This is not always the solution that you will use, but in your professional opinion, come up with the best one. At the end of the day, this is all about helping a patient with a condition and as a professional, you want this to be done the right way.
7. Believe in yourself
When you come up with your questions, do not doubt that you are unable to solve the problem. You have the knowledge and capabilities to do this correctly. Sometimes it is the doubt that keeps us from reaching our goals.
What are your steps when selecting PICO Questions?
We can all learn from each other and having different methods is what makes us all unique. These steps may already be followed by you. What are some other ways you determine your PICOT question ideas? What works for one person is not always work for the next and the same goes for students and professionals. Finding your own methods will save you a lot of time down the line.
