The Benefits of Exercise While in College

The demands of being a college student can be high and can be very stressful and exercise one of the best ways to deal with this.

This exercise can really be anything that gets your body moving for a defined period of time. It could be walking, running, swimming, riding a bike, using exercise equipment, taking exercise classes, etc. The best way to identify if you are doing something that qualifies as exercise is to see if you are breaking a sweat or able to create an increase in heart rate for a reasonable period of time.

If the goal of college is to get good grades, why would it be good to exercise? Below is a summary of all of the benefits:

Relieve stress: While college can be a lot of fun, it can also be extremely stressful. One of the best and most healthy ways to relieve stress is through exercise. For example, if you have a big exam coming up and have been studying all day, it is likely that you can have a high level of stress and be fairly tense. By doing something as simple as going for a 20 minute run, the stress can be naturally released and tenseness decreased.

Feel good: Not only can exercise decrease stress, it can also actually make you feel good. This is because during strenuous exercise, the body can release a natural chemical called endorphins. Endorphins produce a feeling of well-being. And during a period of high stress from an upcoming exam, a shot of stuff that makes you have a feeling of well-being can really help. This can be one of the college tips with the best direct benefits.

Feel productive: With so much to do as a college student, it can be easy to feel like you are falling behind and not getting anything done. When this is the case, we can be overwhelmed with a feeling of being unproductive, which is not the best frame of mind to have. Exercise can help you to snap out of this as it can provide an instant feeling of gratification and productivity. With this being the case, we can use exercise to reset ourselves and put us in the right frame of mind.

Generate energy: Have you ever had a day where you did very little and you found yourself exhausted at the end of the day? The reason why is that the human body is like a natural generator. And if we don’t do anything, we do not generate very much energy. With that being the case, if we increase our level of activity, we can generate more energy. Thus, if you find yourself not having the energy to study, you can take a break to get a modest amount of exercise and you could find yourself with an increase in your energy level.

Make the brain stronger: This is one of the college tips that can get technical so we will try to keep it at a high level. The brain is a muscle. The healthier this muscle is, the more information it can absorb and retain. Exercising the body actually helps to make the brain healthier by increasing oxygen flow and increasing neuron’s creation and survival. It should not be a stretch to say that while you are in college would be a good time to have a healthy brain.
