This year has cost the world yet another legend. The iconic designer Karl Lagerfeld passed away in Paris. According to French outlets, he passed away in a hospital in Paris. Karl missed a number of events in the past few months, which was definitely a cause for speculation. Reports say that he was actually struggling with several health issues. He was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1933. The designer often lied about his age, so if you check his website, you’ll see a completely different year.
Karl was best known for his work at Chanel, where he was the creative director for an astonishing number of 36 years. The German took over the French fashion house in 1983. Founded by Coco Chanel, this label needed an innovative boost at that time, which he managed to bring. Karl reformed the perception of Chanel by bringing back the old, signature staples, which somehow got lost throughout the years. Thanks to Lagerfeld, the tweed fabric, Chanel logo, chic Coco bags once again became the most sought-after fashion picks in the world. He created 6 collections for the fashion house each year. In 2018 he staged the Metiers d’Art 2017/2018 line in his hometown of Hamburg. Most people thought that it would be his last collection, but he kept going.
“It is with deep sadness that the House of CHANEL announces the passing of Karl Lagerfeld, the Creative Director for the CHANEL Fashion House since 1983. An extraordinary creative individual, Karl Lagerfeld reinvented the brand’s codes created by Gabrielle Chanel: the Chanel jacket and suit, the little black dress, the precious tweeds, the two-tone shoes, the quilted handbags, the pearls, and costume jewelry. Regarding Gabrielle Chanel, he said, “My job is not to do what she did, but what she would have done. The good thing about Chanel is it is an idea you can adapt to many things.” A prolific creative mind with endless imagination, Karl Lagerfeld explored many artistic horizons, including photography and short films. The House of Chanel benefited from his talent for all the branding campaigns related to Fashion since 1987. Finally, one cannot refer to Karl Lagerfeld without mentioning his innate sense of repartee and self-mockery.”- Chanel shared on Instagram. But, Chanel was not the only label led by Karl Lagerfeld. The legend was also the creative director of Fendi and his own namesake brand. It is really mind-blowing how this genius managed to keep up with all the work, while also constantly delivering breathtaking collections every single season. His career started in the 1960s when Lagerfeld moved from Germany to Paris and started assisting the iconic Pierre Balmain. From there on he continued to Chloe and took over Fendi at 1965. Lagerfeld arrived at Chanel in 1983, ten years after the death of Gabrielle. He was anything but ordinary. The designer would often stir controversy with his statements, some pointed towards fashion, some even towards politics.
“Thanks to his creative genius, generosity and exceptional intuition, Karl Lagerfeld was ahead of his time, which widely contributed to the House of CHANEL’s success throughout the world. Today, not only have I lost a friend, but we have all lost an extraordinary creative mind to whom I gave carte blanche in the early 1980s to reinvent the brand.”- said Alain Wertheimer, the CEO of Chanel.
Karl will stay remembered as one of the greatest designers of this and the previous century. His work is undoubtedly genius.
