7 Myths Graduates Need to Know: Government Jobs vs Private Sector Jobs

This argument has been going on for a long time and a lot of myths has been spread about one being more lucrative and stable than the other. As with all things in life, it is not always one size fits all and there are pros and cons to everything in life. The same applies to which sector is better to work in.

One is not necessarily better than the other, but the private sector has been posed to be on top. Before we make that judgement, we have to look a bit deeper into what is fact and what is a myth. Offering a ksa service does not mean that you are in a lesser place than those working in the private sector. Here are some myths you need to be aware of.

1. Low earnings

The public sector does not necessarily pay less than the private sector. This has been a myth for a long time, but there are a lot of individuals earning well in the public sector. Earnings are based on the position you are in, not dependent on the sector you work in.

2. No security

It is not just the public sector that is letting people go. The economy has been at a low point and it effects all sectors. Don’t let this myth stop you from submitting your federal cover letter because there is enough job security in the public sector.

3. Bad spaces

Sure, there are a lot of great fancy offices in the private sector, but it is not all the same. Some government spaces are beautiful, but an office is an office at the end of the day.

4. Over qualified

The government is not hiring individuals who are not qualified to do a job. Many graduates do not want to apply for jobs because they believe that they will be over qualified. Just as with the private sector, if you are a good match for the job, you will be considered.

5. Limited growth

A lot of people believe that workers in the public sector is overlooked and does not grow in their careers. If you work in the private sector you have to work just as hard to show your potential to grow. Be sure to find a government resume writer when applying because there are different requirements. People are growing in both sectors depending on their skills and qualifications.

6. Senseless work

You need to have passion for every job that you take on and the same applies for the public sector. The myth is that you only push paper at a government office and no ‘real’ work is done. This is absolutely not true. Without the government a lot of functions would collapse, especially if all workers do is push paper.

7. Corruption

Not every government official is corrupt and this has been one of the biggest myths. You will likely not be influenced to do the wrong thing or help in their corrupt actions. A lot of people working in government as honest as those in the private sector. Corruption is an individual choice and if you don’t participate in it, no one will force you to be corrupt as well. Every worker has rights, even in government.
