Hey, everybody!
Welcome to Worcester State College. I'll be your host, Shayna Dean, get ready for a whirlwind tour. Worcester State College is located in the center of Massachusetts in the city of Worcester, within an hour's drive of all major population centers in New England. It's nice here because we're so close to Boston. It's like 45 minutes. So you can definitely do that for like on the weekend, you can take the train, like $12 roundtrip. It's a fun time, I like to do that sometimes. We have the Worcester Consortium. It's 13 colleges in Worcester and the surrounding areas, um. You can go to the other colleges for classes and you can take one class per semester, and you just-- you need to get your car, or they have a shuttle that takes you around to all the college campuses. We also can use their-- everyone's libraries, take out the books there. Worcester enrolls over 3300 undergraduates. Thirty percent are residential students. Fifty-nine percent are women, and 41% are men. Twelve percent come from diverse backgrounds, and 1.5% are international students coming from 23 countries. Our typical student will be one who is coming probably first generation. They are looking forward to getting their college degree. A lot of our students will come from our local area, even though we will draw students from over 27 states and 23 foreign countries. But that's what makes us so great is there's so much diversity here on our campus, um, socioeconomically, racially, ethnically, and that's really something that we prize here about Worcester State College. The average class size is 19, with a student to faculty ratio of 15:1. Admissions standards are governed by the Department of Higher Education, and consist of a combination of college prep course curriculum in high school, and students' recalculated GPA and SAT. Our admissions policies are governed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We have a Department of Higher Education that sets the standards. So we have what we call a "sliding scale." And it's a combination of GPA and SATs. Our overall average for the grade point average will be a 3.0, and our SAT average is a 1010. Average annual in-state tuition, room and board, and fees is about $15,000. And those coming from out of state will pay close to $21,000. WSC offers 24 majors, 27 minors, 21 graduate programs, and 44 study abroad programs. Those most common among students are Business, Psychology, Nursing, Criminal Justice, and Education. But another major that definitely stands out is Occupational Therapy. OTs support people who have trouble leading a healthy and balanced lifestyle. They work with all ages and enable them to participate in daily activities like putting on their socks or getting a glass of water. But the best part? Occupational therapists are always smiling. Worcester has 188 full-time faculty members. One hundred and forty have their PhD or terminal degree, plus WSC has three Fulbright Scholar faculty, and was first to have an African-American school teacher. The faculty are wonderful in their own fields, they're wonderful to work with. They have all different areas of expertise. And we all work together very well. And I found that to be across the college. I've worked in the Center for Teaching and Learning with a bunch of different faculty from different departments and found it to be wonderful. Everybody is willing to help each other out, which is fantastic. The Worcester Lancers compete at the division III level in the NCAA, the MASCAC, the ECAC, and the NEFC. Worcester offers three types of on-campus housing. Dowden Hall is your traditional freshman residence. Chandler Village has apartments in 26 interconnected townhouses. And Wasylean Hall is a suite-style residence with multiple study areas and lounges for your enjoyment, plus a coffee shop. "Not one singular sensation" but 39 clubs and organizations on top of the chorus, choral, and dance company. Are you a donor? Thank goodness for Ronald Herrick, the world's first successful organ transplant donor, and an alum, class of 1958. Whichever way you plan to give back, Worcester State College will give you the skills. All right, guys, well, that's it for me and YOUniversity TV. Thanks again for joining us here. Go Lancers!
