Hey, what’s up?
I’m Ferrari St. Paul and this is YOUniversity TV, where we put you in university. Today we’re here at Wichita State University, home of the Shockers. Wichita State is located in Wichita, Kansas, the largest city in the state. Wichita State University features a beautiful 330 acre campus nestled in the city and boasts one of the nation’s best outdoor sculpture collections, state of the art research facilities and athletic venues, and even its own golf course. Well one of the unique factors I really liked about this university was the fact that it’s actually in a larger city. This is the largest city in Kansas. So we’re really the hub for a lot of things, for healthcare, for music and fine arts, for the aircraft industry, for business and industry. Wichita State enrolls over 14,000 students, more than 11,000 of which are undergraduates. The student body is about 56% female to 44% male, with minority and international students making up about 25% of the population. We have such a diverse bunch at this campus that you don’t have to be a single person. Like, everybody really gets along, you’re gonna get, you have your international students. We have a lot of Wichita students and surrounding area students. You have your people that came from all over the U.S. We have a lot of older students that come. We are a microcosm of the world. Kansas students looking for admission need to either score a 21 on the ACTs or a combined 980 on the SAT. If they don't have either of those things, then we’re gonna look at their high school transcript and look at any of their pre-college coursework. Tuition runs about $3,800 per year for residents and about $9,600 for non-residents. Average room and board costs add about another $5,860 per year. WSU offers 120 different areas of study, more than 60 graduate programs, and 30 research centers. Class sizes differ, but you won’t find large lecture halls on campus. Many of the freshmen level introduction courses are actually capped at 30 students. There are approximately 14,000 students here, but you don't feel that you’re a number. We do get to know them on a very personal level. Any time we ever need help with anything or even just future plans too, they’re always willing to put in, put into what we’re hopin’ for. Some of Wichita State’s most popular majors include psychology, business administration, accounting, criminal justice, and nursing. WSU’s College of Engineering and its aerospace engineering program are as well known as the hands-on training students receive on campus. Wichita State, they offer a huge cooperative education program, which is pretty much like getting a full engineering job while you’re still in college. There’s so many different companies that are located here in Wichita that have a strong alumni base that really wanna work with our current students. Such as Cessna, Hawker Beechcraft, and a lot of different private aerospace firms. If you’re hoping to become and aerospace engineer, WSU’s wind tunnel will blow you away. Students and Wichita companies use this wind tunnel to test out new products. Wichita State University has 480 full time instructional faculty members on campus, and nearly 80% of them have a PhD or their terminal degree. The university also has a low 17:1 student to faculty ratio. I remember someone telling me that they came into a classroom situation on the first day of class, the faculty member collected all of the IDs of all the students in the class, he took them all, he made copies of all of them, he gave them back at the end of class. The next time they came into class, he had memorized everybody's name and was able to contact those students and interact with those students one on one. 15 men’s and women’s Shocker athletic teams compete at the Division I level in the Missouri Valley Conference. The men’s basketball team made it to the Sweet 16 in 2006 and the baseball team made it to the Sweet 16 in 2007. Here’s a shocking fun fact. WSU students score free tickets to school sporting events. Shocker volleyball and basketball teams take the court here in the Charles Koch Arena. They compete at the Division I level in the Missouri Valley Conference. WSU has "suite" living options on campus ranging from traditional halls to apartment style housing for upper classmen. Freshmen are required to live on campus. You know, I kind of came in with all these different dorm-- you know, what the stereotypical dorm life is supposed to be like, but all those misconceptions were just destroyed the first day I walked in. It was, it was a blast living there, I met a lot of great students, they’re all my age. Wichita State has over 200 university recognized student organizations, and just in case you don’t see one you like, you can start your own. Did you know that WSU’s well known W. Frank Barton School of Business is ranked in the upper third of U.S. business schools? Or that the entrepreneurship program is ranked in the top 25 nationally? Gather ‘round the good stuff. You are looking at the original Hut. Two Wichita State alumni founded Pizza Hut in the basement of a frat house! Talk about makin’ some serious dough! That original Pizza Hut has since been moved to the WSU main campus as a sign of its entrepreneurial heritage. If you’re looking for a school that offers a great education with well known nationally recognized programs, be sure to check out Wichita State University today. Thanks for joining us in Wichita, Kansas on our tour of Wichita State University. I’m Ferrari St. Paul, buh-bye! YOUniversityTV maintains all editorial control on videos produced by YOUniversityTV.
