Hey guys, you're tuned in
to YOUniversity TV. My name's Levon Harvey. And we're at Western New England College in Springfield, Massachusetts. Watch out now-- we're in Golden Bear territory. Let's go. Western New England College is located in Springfield, Massachusetts, with easy day trips to New York City, Boston, and Hartford, close to popular ski resorts and beautiful beaches. Beautiful campus. We have a lot of things nearby. Like New York City isn't too far away. You can take the train. You can also go into Boston and do a lot of fun activities there. We're also really close to downtown Springfield and Hartford, so there's a lot to do. Western New England's Springfield campus has 215 acres with a mall, gazebo area, and brand new modern facilities. Ten campus buildings and athletic venues have been built or renovated in the last ten years, with more facilities already in design stages. There's a lot to do outside of campus. There's historical sites. There's clubs for over 18. You can go dancing with your friends. There's really nice restaurants, the Basketball Hall of Fame. Even though there's so much to do outside of Springfield, a lot of students actually choose to stay on campus during the weekend, because we offer so many things to do here on campus. We have comedians come. We have musicians come and entertain. I live 25 minutes away, and I only went home once for Christmas. So I never wanted to go home. Stop by the rock and see what's going on around campus. It's one of the most popular landmarks at WNEC. No one ever sees the rock being painted, but it often changes to advertise student activities. Western New England serves about 2,500 undergraduate students from 31 states. The average class size is 20, and the student to faculty ratio is 15:1. Due to the high concentration of males in some programs, such as Engineering, about 60% of full-time undergraduates are males. The average freshmen has a GPA of 3.2, higher for engineers and pre-pharmacy students. The minimum SAT, as well as averages, vary by the four academic schools and by academic programs. For most students, tuition and fees will cost about $28,000, and the typical freshmen will pay about $11,000 for room and board. On the plus side, 90% of students receive financial aid, including merit scholarships. Western New England offers nearly 40 full-time undergraduate majors through the schools of Arts and Sciences, Business, and Engineering. There's also Masters and Doctoral programs, as well as a law school on campus. And soon, a school of pharmacy's expected to open its doors. Our business school has an AACSB accreditation, which basically only 10% of the schools in the world have. Schools like Harvard have it, and we're very lucky to have it. The most common popular majors include Sport Management, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Accounting, Mechanical Engineering, and Communications. This is one of only a few institutions in the country with a total enrollment of less than 4,000 that has the highest accreditation in Engineering, Business, Law, and Social Work. There are 177 full-time faculty members. Ninety percent have earned their PhD or other terminal degree. The teachers here are really good. They'll give you their home phone numbers, their cell phones, and they really want you to contact them. So one of my teachers, he wanted us to text him. It was his new thing. So they're really good about getting back to you. They really want you to stay on track with your work. I am up till one or two in the morning on occasion. So if a student sends me an instant message, if a student sends me an e-mail, and occasionally students use only Facebook as a means of communication. I actually have a Facebook page I use to send out reminders to students on occasion. These recently renovated athletic fields complement the Golden Bears rise in national status. Several of the teams have gone far in the post-season, including baseball, soccer, and lacrosse. Traditional halls are offered to freshmen. Suite-style units are open for sophomores. Most juniors elect to stay in on-campus apartment complexes, and many seniors reside in the Evergreen Village townhouse. First year students use a unique online matching system to find compatible roommates and get to know what hall and room they want to live in. All the residence halls are equipped with cable television, including HBO, and laundry is free. There are over 60 clubs and organizations, like the Concert Band, the Off-road Bicycle Club, or feel free to start your own. And many organizations, such as the Society of Women Engineers, have an academic or professional focus. Our students have been doing study abroad for many years, and we've had students in Australia and New Zealand and England and in Italy. But recently, we've been putting into place these one week to two week travel courses. And we've had students going on Spring Break or on Winter Break or the first part of the summer to places like Guatemala. We had a trip to Ireland, and students went into businesses in Ireland and looked at the way that business operates in Europe. So if you want personal attention and small classes, and want to be well prepared for your career or grad school, check out Western New England College. What a time here at Western New England College. Did you know it's a tradition for students to take their picture next to the Golden Bear? Make sure you put that on your "to do" list. For YOUniversity TV, I'm Levon. We'll catch you next time. |
