Hey guys, greetings from
West Virginia University, stomping grounds for the Mountaineers. I'm Jessica-- And I'm Shayna, and we're here for YOUniversity TV. Hope you guys are ready for an excellent tour. West Virginia University is located in Morgantown, West Virginia, America's number one small city close to beautiful mountain vistas and some of the best hiking, rock climbing, cycling, skiing, and whitewater adventures. Morgantown itself is a very traditional college town, so we have your malls, your movie theaters, a cute little main strip which has neat little eateries and boutiques. Forty-five minutes from campus we can go to a major ski resort. Thirty-five minutes from campus we have one of the major whitewater rivers in the United States, the Cheat River, and so the outdoor activities of rock climbing, rappelling, are minutes from this campus. WVU has three campuses in Morgantown on 913 acres with 233 buildings. The main campus has a mix of historic and brand new facilities, miles of paved trails, and a thriving downtown within easy walking distance. The downtown campus has several architectural styles, predominantly red brick buildings, including Victorian, Second Empire, Federal, Neoclassical, and collegiate Gothic style, just to name a few. We have theatrical productions, concerts, festivals, speakers that will come through town, and the town in itself is just a very active, vibrant campus that really supports the community and really supports the college. WVU enrolls around 5,000 freshman every year. Fifty-eight percent are residents of the state, and 42% are non-residents. The student body is made up of 52% men, 48% women, and 7% minority students. Even though it's a pretty large campus, you really can't tell because you run into the same people everywhere you go, so it seems like there could be 2000 students here when really there's 28,000 students. The average incoming freshman has a GPA of about 3.4, a composite ACT score of 23, or combined critical reading and math SAT score of 1050. Upon initial review we won't look at any other factor besides GPA, test scores, however if a student is borderline or if they're up for one of our top scholarships, then we'll factor in community service, extracurricular activities, as well as awards and scholarships. Students who are residents of West Virginia can expect to pay about $5,500 in yearly tuition and non-residents about $17,000. Those who choose to live on campus will owe an additional $7,000 for room and board, and all students will end up paying around $1,000 for books and supplies. West Virginia University offers 185 majors-- business, engineering, communications, and journalism coming out on top for student faves. The library staff actually gives a little course called, "How to write a term paper," which is pretty neat and you don't see in a lot of universities and it comes right from the reference librarians who know how to do research. Need a break while on campus? Be sure to check out Woodburn Circle. It's a popular student hangout where kids just sit back and relax, and the fight song plays from the bell tower every day at 12:20. Let's go Mountaineers! We're having a camp for children ages 11 to 14 who are overweight and who want to come stay for a couple of weeks here at WVU and have a good time and learn about nutrition and physical activity so some of my undergraduate students are gonna help with that. Eighty-eight percent of full time faculty members at West Virginia have Doctorates or professional degrees out of the 1400-plus teachers at the school. Yeah, the faculty are great here. Their backgrounds and their research is amazing. All you have to do is ask a professor if they need help with their research, and more often than not they're very willing to let you help them with their research. West Virginia's theme song, "Country Roads" has been performed at every winning home football game since the 1970's. John Denver even performed the song right here for a sold-out crowd in Mountaineer Stadium for it's dedication. The West Virginia Mountaineers compete in the Big East Conference. A member of the NCAA Division I level, WVU has 13 teams that have won several national championships, including 13 NCAA rifle championships. Football and school spirit here is really energized. It brings the campus together. Nothing beats 60,000 people crowded in the stadium cheering on the Mountaineers. You'll have your choice of one of the 15 residence halls. Several halls feature residential colleges that provide individual attention, special programs and activities, and extra faculty interaction. International housing is also available for students who wish to learn about each other's cultures. For freshmen, it's kind of like your headquarters, your networking for your future years. A lot of my friends that I have now are who I met in the dorm. And our rooms are actually really big compared to what I've seen other people's rooms. At least the schools my friends have been to. WVU offers 320 student organizations, so get out there and get involved in juggling, snowboarding, astronomy, be a part of the debate team, or join the active Greek system. The social life is another huge deciding factor in coming to WVU. We have over 300 student clubs and organizations on campus. We have your more serious, you know, political and religious affiliated clubs. We have our Greek sororities and fraternities, but also we have a lot more whimsical clubs, so you might want to join the Guitar Hero club, or the Dance Dance Revolution club. So check this out: WVU is one of the first schools in the nation to get a forensic science major. Students get some serious world experience in each crime scene investigation house. So if you're looking for a groundbreaking research program with quality faculty, be sure to look further into West Virginia University. No need to worry about parking or traffic here at WVU. Just hop on the Personal Rapid Transit to get yourself between campuses. And the best part about it is it's totally free! Just swipe your Mountaineer ID card and off you go. And that's it for us too! Hope you guys enjoyed your time at West Virginia University. Bye-bye! |
