Hey, what's up? I'm Ferrari St. Paul, with YOUniversity TV, where we put you in university. Today we're here at the University of Texas at Arlington, home of the Mavericks. Come join us on our tour. UT Arlington is centrally located in Arlington, Texas, about halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth, offering students a wealth of cultural entertainment, careers and educational opportunities. Arlington is a marvelous place to live. It's also the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States. We are technically the entertainment district. Here pretty soon we're gonna get the Dallas Cowboys' stadium. We have the Texas Rangers' stadium right up the street. We have Six Flags, we have Hurricane Harbor. We have all the restaurants right there. Yeah, lots of different places to go hang out. UT Arlington's main campus features a beautiful college town look, and includes more than a hundred buildings, spanning from classic brick exteriors to modern design. The university also has a downtown Fort Worth campus. If you see a crowd of students gathered around Hereford's head, you know it's finals week. They must be trying to get their last bit of luck before the big test. Nearly 25,000 students attend UT Arlington, and about 5,000 live on campus. The university features a diverse student body with minority and international students making up almost half of the population. Here at UTA there's so much culture and so much diversity that not only am I learning in the classroom, but I'm also learning from my peers around me because everybody has a different background. It's not one majority culture. Admission to the University of Texas at Arlington is based on a sliding scale incorporating several factors like class rank and SAT or ACT scores. Students graduating in the top 25% of their high school class are automatically admitted as long as SAT or ACT scores are submitted. Yearly tuition for full-time students taking 14 or more credit hours is just over $7,000. If you're only taking 13 credit hours or less, you'll pay less, just under $7,000 a year. My dad when I came to orientation was in Iraq. So my mother, she didn't know how to go about getting loans, so this young lady named Jasmine, she was an orientation leader, she took my mother to Davis Hall, got her a loan. She just made my mother feel comfortable, which made me feel comfortable, 'cause somebody took care of my mother in a stressful time of our lives. If it's choices in education you seek, UT Arlington offers more than 180 different Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degree programs. Some of the most popular majors include Engineering, the Sciences, Nursing, Architecture, Education, and Business. Kalpana Chawla is a UT Arlington Engineering Alum. She was the first Indian born woman to travel into space. This hall was built in her honor. The 1,100 faculty members at UT Arlington are nationally and internationally recognized for their cutting edge research, teaching expertise and engagement in the community. Fourteen men's and women's Maverick athletic teams compete at the Division I level in the Southland Conference. And the wheelchair basketball team has won the national championship seven times. UT Arlington students voted to make Blaze their mascot. To be a Maverick is much more than a saying, it means to be a visionary, to be a leader. Six residence halls, 17 apartment communities and Greek housing gives students at UT Arlington a wealth of choices for modern on-campus living. The really great thing about living in the dorms here at UT Arlington is that we have a living and learning program. So you live in different parts of the dorms that adhere to the type of major that you're in. And in that way you get to know people who are in the same major or department that you are, and you kind of build this uh, this area of people that you can go to when you have problems. As if living in a large metropolitan area doesn't offer enough to do, there are over 300 student organizations, intramural, and club sports, well known national and international speakers, and free Friday night concerts. Just to name a few. There's always something to do in this area. The options are endless. In case you didn't know, research is big at UT Arlington, with expenditures reaching $40 million in 2006-2007. And that number is expected to grow even higher. To support that growth, the university is building a huge Engineering and Science research building, center for Structural Engineering, and a Civil Engineering lab building. Here at UT Arlington, there is a growing emphasis on involving Undergraduates early on in real experiences, not only in Physics, or Physics research, but in other departments across the campus. The university is also investing in other parts of the campus, with the recent addition of a new activities center, and the opening of its Smart Hospital. They also spend time here in the Smart Hospital, working with our simulated patients, which are human patient simulators that are babies and children. They come in here and work through scenarios just like real life they would see in a hospital or a clinic setting. They work on skills to assess the patient, they work on skills to figure out what kind of treatment the patient needs, and even work on skills as to how to carry out an order that a physician or a nurse practitioner would give them. If you're looking for a forward thinking university that offers challenging real world educational opportunities, in the middle of one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, be sure to check out the University of Texas at Arlington today. Thanks for joining us on our tour of the University of Texas at Arlington. I'm Ferrari St. Paul, and I am outta here.
