Hey, what's up guys?

You're watching
YOUniversity TV.

Today we're on the campus of
the University of St. Thomas,

which was founded in 1947
by the Basilian Fathers.

The University of St. Thomas
is located in downtown

Houston, Texas, right in
the heart of Museum District,

which is filled with both
culture and faith.

Houston is great.

I love living in Texas,
there's all kind of shops;

there's a chocolate bar
that's right down the road

on West Alabama.

Of course you can go see
the Texans play,

the Astros play, and there's all
kind of live music venues

that you can go check out.

UST remains Houston's first
and only Catholic university,

and many students consider
the University of St. Thomas

campus to be the perfect
home away from home.

St. Thomas' campus occupies
the better part of 19 square

blocks in downtown Houston,
and a series of their buildings

were designed by world renowned
architect Philip Johnson.

In fact, thanks to a $65 million
campaign, UST has recently

been able to expand its
beautiful campus even more.

St. Thomas has over 3,300
students with a population

of 60 percent women
and 40 percent men.

Incoming freshmen to St. Thomas
have an average SAT score

of 1141 or an average
ACT score of 24.

Over 27 percent of entering
freshmen rank in the top

ten percent of their
high school classes.

Tuition for all students runs
around $21,000 per year.

For additional fees
plus room and board,

add on $8000 extra.

St. Thomas is sensitive to
the fact that higher education

is a major investment.

They're willing to
create a plan

that is affordable for you
and your family.

University of St. Thomas
provides 31 undergraduate

and 11 graduate degrees,
giving students

a large range of
career options.

Some of the most popular majors
include International Studies,

Psychology, Finance,
Communications, and Accounting.

One of my favorite courses is
the course on Social Management.

We look at outsourcing
and off shoring,

and impacts of that.

In fact, I'm in the summer
taking students to India on

a course that deals with that.

A mere twelve to one student to
teacher ratio makes for a highly

personalized relationship
between UST students

and their instructors.

I really enjoy having small
class sizes 'cause the teachers

are really interested in how
you're doing in the class

and you can meet with
them outside of class,

so it's a really great
experience.

We're here with Jose.

Jose, can you tell me a little
bit about Father Keon Day?

Father Keon Day is a day where
you get to take your professors

or alumni out to lunch.

It's a good way to get
to know some alumni

or get to meet some professors.

Plus, nearly 90 percent of
St. Thomas' 131 full-time

faculty members have earned
top degrees in their field.

So students know they're
getting a quality education.

They are true leaders
in their fields.

I happen to be the Chair
of the Faculty Senate

and Chair of the Faculty,
and I'm very proud

of the faculty here.

The relationships that I've
established with some of

my professors are more than just
mentor-mentee relationships.

I hope, and I'm pretty sure
it will, you know,

last beyond college.

St. Thomas University's athletic
programs feature women's

volleyball and men's soccer,
which compete at the NAIA level.

If you're thinking campus living
is the way you want to go,

St. Thomas offers either their
Guinan residence hall featuring

double occupancy rooms with
balcony and private bathrooms,

or their Augustan
Living-Learning Community.

The residence hall is
a great place to live.

I'm an RA at Guinan Hall,
which is right behind us.

I loved it.

I loved being around,
I made friends with everybody,

we would do dinner together
on Wednesday nights.

We have a lot of different
events in the residence hall

that residents come out to.

We have Wonderful Wednesdays,
where at 10 o'clock, a bunch of

food's put out, everyone comes
down, plays ping pong.

Believe there's nothing
to do on campus?

Wrong.

The University of St. Thomas
has more than 70 student

organizations, plus a campus
ministry group,

which is enough to
keep anyone busy.

No, there's something
for everybody here,

whether it's intramural sports,
if you're a sports fanatic,

you can be involved in that.

We have varsity sports,
we have, you know,

some of the kids are here
strictly for academics,

we have great academic programs.

The University of St. Thomas is
named one of 123 outstanding

universities in the 2008
Princeton Review's

Best Western Colleges
publication.

UST was also named as one
of 21 top Catholic colleges

and universities by
the Cardinal Newman Society.

I bet you didn't know that UST's
campus houses the childhood home

of Howard Hughes,
which in addition to being

a building on campus,
is also a tourist site.

So if a small school with close
student teacher relationships

near the heart of
a major city interests you,

look no further than
the University of St. Thomas.

Well that was pretty awesome.

Thanks so much
for joining us here

at the University of St. Thomas
in Houston, Texas.

I'm Shayna Jean,
and we'll see you real soon.
