Hey, what’s up?
Today we’re at the University of Southern Mississippi. Which is home of the Golden Eagles. I’m Nicole Aaron for YOUniversity TV. And I’m Shayna Gene and my friend Seymour here is gonna kick start our campus tour. Let’s go, guys. The University of Southern Mississippi is located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi which is known as the Hub City which is just a short drive from New Orleans, the capital city of Jackson, Mobile, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast beaches. Our nickname here in Hattiesburg is the Hub City because we’re centrally located. If you can’t find anything to do here as far as all types of music things, art things all around the city, you can find something to do. And we take day trips all the time. So it’s, it’s a very fun city, it's an easy drive in any direction so people come here just because of our location. Southern Mississippi has two campuses including its nearly 1,090 acre main Hattiesburg campus where you’ll find everything from students relaxing under the live oaks to students having fun in the state of the art Thad Cochran Center which is the newest addition to the student union building. The Gulf Park campus features a beachfront location that is home to the Friendship Oak which is more than 500 years old an a historic landmark for the coastal region. Southern Miss legend has it that if you walk across Lake Byron with your sweetheart, you’re destined to be together forever. More than 13,000 students are enrolled in the Hattiesburg campus which features a male to female ratio of about 40% men to 60% women. The Gulf Park campus enrolls nearly 2,500 with a male to female ratio of about 33% men to 67% women. We want them to choose Southern Miss, not only to go to class and make good grades but ultimately, we want them to get a good job that pays a lot of money. Wondering what it takes to get into Southern Miss? Incoming freshman average a 1027 on the SATs and a 21.6 on the ACTs. In addition, honors college students average a 29 on the ACT and presidential scholars average a whopping 30.4. We have one of the oldest honors colleges in the nation and typically instead of a professor teaching those classes it’s gonna be a department head. That's a really neat experience especially as a freshman or sophomore and a lot of your classes are gonna take field trips, they’re gonna be active learning classes. And all that’s gonna be paid for by the honors college, so it’s really a neat experience, I would recommend it to anyone. Tuition is a good value for Mississippi statements at just under $10,000 per year. That rate is slightly higher for out-of-staters at around $16,700 per year. On campus housing runs a little over $2,800 per year. Southern Miss and Hattiesburg are ranked number two in the country by Caldwell Banker in their College Home Price Comparison Index for the best housing bargain in a big time college sports town. 171 different majors are offered on the Hattiesburg campus and 74 on the Gulf Park campus. The most popular majors include education, business, the health professions, and biological sciences. All of our students are involved in research projects. It’s required that you do two semesters as an undergraduate minimum, but our most successful students start research as freshmen so if they go on to industrial positions they’d be very much more qualified for the applied research they do in industry. The main campus has a reputation for its polymer sciences, art, nursing, and education programs, while the Gulf Park campus is known for its film, entertainment industry, marine science, and nursing programs. Every student we’ve ever had in our department in sociology who wanted to go to grad school got in and got a full ride. So that’s something I’m very proud of. Southern Miss employs over 700 full time faculty members and over 275 of them are tenured. Southern Miss also features a low student to faculty ratio of around 17 to one. Miss is known for their athletics. 14 men’s and women’s Golden Eagle athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division one level in Conference USA. Now I don’t know if you guys have heard about a man named Brett Favre, but he’s a future NFL hall of famer, a former Green Bay Packer an most importantly, a Southern Miss Alum. Well we do have a lot of school spirit here and there’s a lot of tradition to go along with that school spirit. One of the things that you’ll see on game day here, we have an area on campus called The District and that’s basically just a little tailgating area and we’ll be out there all day grillin’ out and just basically getting ready for the game. And we have similarly tailgating activities for baseball, basketball, pretty much every major sport. Southern Miss has 15 residence halls as well as the Village which is newly constructed housing for sororities. I’ve had a great experience living on campus. My freshman year especially, living in the * scholarship housing, I made ridiculous amounts of friends and I really just enjoyed it. Now that I’m staying in McCarty I have my own private bath and things, really great facilities and it’s really making me be even more involved on campus. At Southern Miss, boredom is not an option. With 250 student organizations and groups on campus including things like intramural sports, Greek life, marching band, and the student newspaper. There are plenty of exciting ways for students to find their place and make their mark at Southern Miss. We have over 200 clubs here at USM and, you know, getting involved in things that you didn't really think you liked and, you know, opening your mind up to different things is really the best advice I can give because that was the hardest thing for me but it was also the most beneficial. If it’s too nice to exercise indoors come take a jog on southern Miss’ Fitness Trail where you can take in the surroundings and beautiful fresh air. The people are awesome, the staff is awesome, all the students are super, super friendly. Did you know that Hattiesburg was named a top ten college town by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine in 2007? And Washington Monthly ranks Southern Miss in the top 100 national universities, the highest ranking of any school in Mississippi. If you’re looking for a great college education at a national university in a fun and historic setting be sure to check out the University of Southern Mississippi today. Thanks for joining us here in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on our tour of the University of Southern Mississippi. I’m Nicole Aaron. I’m Shayna, see you next time.
