Hey, get excited
because you're watching University of Minnesota, Duluth. I'm Sheana. And I'm Nicole. Let's get this party started. The University of Minnesota Duluth is located in the beautiful international shipping port city of Duluth, Minnesota. Duluth has the highest number of parks per capita in the U.S. and is the gateway to Minnesota's North Shore and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The students who enroll here will take advantage of all kinds of opportunities along the North Shore of Lake Superior, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Opportunities to do exciting outdoor activities like rock climbing and ice climbing, kayaking, windsurfing, outdoor camping. The Duluth campus is made up of 247 acres and sits atop a hill overlooking Lake Superior; the largest freshwater lake in the world. Rain, snow, sun, wind? Not a problem. All structures are linked together by this skyway and Concore system. Connecting not only buildings, but students. The Marshall W. Alworth Hall Planetarium has a 30 foot dome and a Spitz A3P star machine. It holds up to 70 people and projects approximately 1500 stars. Inside it also holds a historic telescope that was once owned by John H. Darling. UMD enrolls over 9,000 undergrads from 34 countries and 45 states. Fifty-one percent are men, 49 percent women, and six percent are students of color. Eighty-eight percent of classes are taught to forty students or less. And the student to faculty ratio is 21 to 1. UMD ADMITS STUDENTS SELECTIVELY, SO IF YOU WISH TO ATTEND ADMISSION WILL BE BASED ON HIGH SCHOOL COURSEWORK AND PERFORMANCE; TAKING THE ACT PLUS WRITING OR SAT IS REQUIRED. In-state students will pay a yearly tuition of approximately $11,000. While those coming from out of state will pay closer to $13,000. All students will pay around $1500 for books and an additional $6200 towards room and board. We offer 75 majors in five undergraduate colleges and schools. Some of them very unique programs. And for students that are even a little bit undecided or yet, discovering where it is they'd like to pursue their academic programs, it gives them many options. I've really enjoyed my classes at UMD, I've done a lot of different things. I'm actually, I'm a business major but I have a science minor. So I've gotten kind of both ends of the spectrum. One of the things that I like about our program is that all students on campus are invited to participate, they can audition for every show and they do. They can be cast in any show, they can work behind the scenes, and so it's a really active department that way, we're always reaching out to students outside of the theatre department. UMD has a medical school and a pharmacy school, also an internationally accredited business school and an undergraduate engineering program that ranks among the best in the nation. The University of Minnesota Duluth has 564 total faculty members. Forty percent hold their doctorate and 77 percent have the highest degree possible in their field. The thing that I like about the faculty here is that we're diverse, we teach from different points of view but we agree we're all going for the same place. I've always found it really easy to get hold of my professor's office hours, and some of them are really friendly; they're like other students too. The advisement program here has been nationally recognized. To me that's the most important to students and to parents. The UMD Bulldogs compete at the varsity level in Division II of the NSI Conference with six men's sports, and eight women's sports. Hockey is the only sport to compete at the Division I level with the women's team holding four national championship titles. And following an undefeated season, the football team won the 2008 championship. There are four residence halls and five apartment housing options on campus. Providing the extra freedom and responsibility students desire while still retaining quick, convenient access to all campus facilities. I've lived on campus every single year since I've been here. I love it, everything's so convenient and especially during winters when driving would be pretty difficult and getting to those 8 a.m. classes. You never have to walk outside for any of your classes, and coming from Duluth it can get a little cold during the winter but knowing that everything is connected you don't have to-- you can go to class in shorts in the middle of December and it's awesome. There are more than 200 student clubs and organizations from professional to honorary, political to social action, religious to Greek, and recreational to special interest groups. Now when you get to school, don't spend all of your time locked away in your residence hall because 90 percent of students participate in the recreational sports and outdoor program. And even if you don't want to major in the area, definitely check out one of their many clubs. My favorite? The North Shore Climbers. Want to hike your way to the top literally and academically? Then join the University of Minnesota Duluth in the great outdoors. Thanks for joining us here. Hope you had fun. See you next time. Bye Champ. Come on, let's go.
