Hey guys, thanks for
tuning into YOUniversity TV.

I'm Levon.

And I'm Jessica and we are
kicking off this tour of

the University of
Massachusetts Boston.

Only minutes away
from downtown

and neighbors of
John F. Kennedy Library.

So come on, let's check out
this 177-acre campus.

Let's go.

The University of
Massachusetts is located

three miles south of downtown
Boston, Massachusetts,

just a short distance from
the beaches of Cape Cod

and a scenic drive to
the mountains of New Hampshire.

It is a really short ride
into downtown Boston.

There's a shuttle
bus that goes

directly from the campus
to the T station,

which runs every seven
minutes, I want to say.

So you can hop on it and can get
into downtown Boston

and downtown Boston
and Cambridge,

as you know, have
wonderful things to offer.

There are museums,
there's the library,

you know there's
just this historic city

that you can literally hop on
a T and be in five minutes in.

The university is situated

on a beautiful, serene,
waterfront setting

on the Boston
Harbor Peninsula.

Covering 177 acres,

campus is next to the John F.
Kennedy Library and Museum

and the Commonwealth
of Massachusetts'

State Archives and Museum.

The location of the school
really is wonderful because

you're right next to the ocean.

So if you just want to get away,
you can read a book by the ocean

and all that sort of stuff.

But the T stop is only
like ten minutes away,

so you can get into the city,

you can go to Red Sox games,
you can go to concerts,

you can do all
sorts of fun things.

Like the Celtics
and the Bruins,

it's just--it's a wonderful
city to be young in.

The university enrolls more
than 14,000 students.

Approximately 40%
are male, 60% female,

and 44% of the university's
undergraduate students

are from diverse
backgrounds.

The university boasts a
15:1 student to faculty ratio

with an average
class size of 28.

We're looking for
at least a B or better

and about 1050
or so on the SATs

and that would be the critical
reasoning and math scores.

The approximate cost to attend
UMass Boston as a full-time,

in-state student is
about $12,000 a year

and slightly over $24,000
for out-of-state students.

Students sharing
an apartment

pay and average of $10,500
a year for room and board.

Students can choose from
5 undergraduate colleges

with more than 100
academic programs.

Don't stress if you're
undecided on what to study.

UMass Boston's general
education courses

are a great way to discover
your skills and your interests.

Or work with the faculty
to come up with

an individualized
major all your own.

The most popular majors are
management, psychology,

nursing, English,
and political science.

Nursing students are
definitely prepared

to work in
a real hospital,

after logging hours in
this simulation room.

They work with SimMan
who displays the symptoms

of a code blue heart attack.

He breathes
and he talks.

Well, we're not
real nurses.

We just play them
for YOUniversity TV.

Doctor?

UMass Boston has
862 faculty members,

96% hold the highest
degrees in their field

and over half
are full-time.

The faculty also
includes Guggenheim

and Fulbright Fellows,

recipients of multi-million
dollar research grants

and a Pulitzer Prize winner.

UMass Boston Beacons compete in
the Division 3 Varsity programs,

producing three National
Championships.

Our sailing team is a club
and it's a Division 1

and we're actually really
proud of our sailing team

because they beat
the Coast Guard.

And that's something
we like to boast about.

UMass Boston has no
residence halls on campus,

but partners with local
housing complexes

to provide student apartments.

The Office of
Student Housing

will help you find your
ultimate roommate

with a matching program.

All you've got to do
is fill out a questionnaire

and you'll be paired
with someone who

shares your
same interests.

Ooo, getting a call now.

I think I found my match.

Hello?

Okay.

Jessica Woody?

Huh! Roomie!

Can I request
a roommate exchange?

I'm so excited!

Alright.

Get social in one of the 70-plus
student organizations.

Write for the student newspaper,

take photos for
the Beacon yearbook,

or intern at WUMB FM.

Develop your
leadership skills

and stand up for the little
fella as Student Senator.

You can represent your peers in
the Beacon Leadership Project.

And not for nothing;

you'll gain two semesters
worth of course credits.

Hey Jessica,
let's head out to the ocean.

It's looking real pr--

Jessica, why are you
petting a wild animal?

Lavonne,
don't worry.

These fake coyote
are just a creative way

to keep geese off
the campus grass.

Well that
creative coyote

is sure enough keeping
me off the grass.

I'll head out to
the ocean solo.

Get him!

What, there's
another one?

Oh my God.

I don't know
where to go now.

In need of a stellar education,

but don't know what to
be when you grow up?

Don't worry, the University
of Massachusetts Boston

caters to students like you.

The university's
marina is used

by marine biology students
and by the sailing program.

And by the end
of the semester,

you can be certified
to sail all by yourself.

Wait Lavonne,
did you get your certification

before you dragged
me on this boat?

Yes, I did.

But this is my first
time sailing by myself.

Well okay, well let's do
some sightseeing then.

Fire her up!

Alright, great and thanks for
joining us at UMass Boston.

For YOUniversity TV,
I'm Levon.

And I'm Jessica,
we'll catch you next time.

Off we go.
