Hey, I'm Chloe. I'm Levon, and this is Smokey for YOUniversity TV at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville here in the Volunteer State. Which is named in honor of the overwhelming number of Tennesseans who volunteered to go to war, right Smokey? The University of Tennessee is in downtown Knoxville, only an hour drive from the Smoky Mountains. The volunteer creed is "One who bearest the torch shadoweth oneself to give light to others." It's kind of a doctrine of servant humility, and that's the thing that UT tries to embody, we try to give back to the community, we try to volunteer and we try to really make our presence felt in the community of Knoxville. The campus and its signature hill lures students with nearby lakes and national parks. The University's 550 acre campus is on the Tennessee River, with a mix of traditional and modern architecture featuring the latest technology and lots of open green spaces. The torch bearer is a symbol of the ability to light the way at the University of Tennessee. This statue sits in the middle of campus reminding students of their goal to be leaders, and top students are declared as "torch bearers" themselves. Tennessee enrolls around 27,000 students, 51 percent women, 49 percent men and 15 percent minorities. Students come from all 50 states and 100 foreign countries, and more than 70 percent of their classes have less than 30 students. Incoming freshmen on average have received an ACT score of 26 and have an average GPA of 3.7. We think that the numbers are important; the numbers being your test scores and being your core GPA, but we know that there's a person behind those numbers, and from the minute that you get here, from the day that you start, we will help to support you so that you can succeed. And we'll do that starting with Welcome Week, with so many activities you won't have time to be homesick. In-state students will pay around $6,000 in tuition and fees while those coming from out-of-state pay around $18,000. In addition, campus housing costs about $4,000. Go Vols! And if you chose to get the meal plan, you'll pay an extra $3,000. The University of Tennessee offers 105 majors and 85 minors. Some student favorites are Psychology, English, Biology, Business, Engineering, and Political Science. We have a brand new international business collateral, or a minor, at the University of Tennessee. We don't just look at different departments as stand alone departments such as marketing or finance because the business problems that they're going to be experiencing and dealing with on a day to day basis are multidisciplinarian integrated. One of the things that I've been most impressed with the University is the funding of freshman year seminars, where regular faculty meet with 15 students for weekly sessions and talk about issues or ideas and put a face to the faculty. Tennessee employs more than 1,000 full-time faculty members, 90 percent have their PhD, professional degree or terminal degree, and 50 percent are tenured. But the amazing thing about Tennessee is not only will you be here doing it on your own but your teachers, your counselors and your mentors all will take care of you. While the faculty are very professional in a variety of different levels from everything from research to working in their individual academies, we take the relationships with the students very seriously here. The professors are really open and they really are excited about working with the students. I know most of my professors on a really personal level and I always go to their office hours anytime if I have questions or comments or just want to chat. The Tennessee Volunteers have 18 Division I sports teams and is home to 500 student athletes. The Vols and Lady Vols, as they're best known, compete as a member in the Southeastern Conference. UT Knoxville requires all freshmen to live on campus. You're sure to find your home away from home at one of the 13 residence halls that have traditional rooms, suites, or apartments available. Well I live in Andy Holt Apartments, which is one of our on-campus apartment choices, and we have two bedrooms and two study areas, a living room, a bathroom and a kitchen. And it's really great because we have resident assistants, and each month she plans a program, like maybe a movie night or "Go to the Mall" night, or sometimes academic and sometimes like, diversity awareness programs. So it's a really great way to kind of meet people and also interact with the girls who live on my floor. UT has more than 450 student organizations for students to get involved. You will never get bored on campus. I have a lot of friends in a lot of different organizations, so there's always something to do. You can join Team Vols or one of 43 fraternities or sororities or you can play at the best sports rec facility in the country. UT co-manages Oakridge National Laboratory, the largest federal research lab in the country. This relationship attracts top notch faculty to the University and allows students excellent research opportunities. I absolutely feel like I'm getting a good education here. People at Oakridge National Laboratory, the people I work with are brilliant, the professors I get to learn from are absolute geniuses. The people who are working with the neutron are people I get to work with on a daily basis. So if you're looking for a university that combines innovative ideas with international and intercultural opportunities, great professors and a safe campus community... ...be sure to check out UTK.edu for more information. Thanks for joining YOUniversity TV at the University of Tennessee Knoxville--I'm Levon. And I'm Chloe, and it's been a doggone fun time. Thanks Smokey. Go Vols!
