Hey guys, what's up? I'm Shayna Jean [assumed spelling] and this is Youniversity TV where we put you in university. Today we are at Southern Utah University, home of the Thunderbirds. Thor and I here are about to take a sour through the campus. Let's go!

Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City, Utah, which is a classic college city in the southwest part of the state, about two hours northeast of Las Vegas. Southern Utah's 133 acre campus is surrounded by red rock mountains, unique to the region, and features a beautiful setting situated in the middle of 13 national and state parks, recreation, and wilderness areas.

They have everything. In the summertime you can play, go hiking, do anything, outdoor sports, and in the wintertime you have [inaudible] go skiing up there.

I've been rock climbing, and I've been cliff jumping with my friends.

About an hour and a half north from here there's um, natural hot springs that people like to drive up to and kind of go hot-tubbing out in the wilderness.

Southern Utah University enrolls over 7,000 students with a female to male ratio of 54 to 46.

I love this school. Everybody makes eye contact, smiles, they're willing to help you out. That's, it's nice, especially if you come and you're nervous for school to start. I never thought I would stay at the same school for all four years, I just, I love to try new things, and I was here for a year and I knew I would stay here for my entire undergrad.

Admission to SUU is considered competitive and based on an index value that weighs academic performance based on a student's G.P.A., and ACT, SAT score.

The average G.P.A. is a 3.4, the average ACT for students coming in to the university is a 22, and that is equivalent to a 1030 SAT score, without the writing portion, and that is a point to note, that the writing portion is not required.

Tuition for Utah residents is a great deal at around 3,200 dollars per year. Tuition for out-of-staters is around 10,800 per year, and room and board adds about another 4,400 dollars per year for all students.

For what you pay, the quality that you get is exceptional. We've been ranked by a number of organizations. Consumer's Digest has ranked SUU for the second time in a row as one of America's top 10 schools in the nation.

SUU offers over 147 options in specialized training, associate, and baccalaureate degrees. Just so you know, 83 percent of classes have 30 or fewer students, and 50 percent have 20 or fewer. Some of the most popular majors include business, accounting, psychology, education, biological sciences, criminal justice and engineering. Pre-health majors can enjoy rigorous hands-on training to prepare them for further education, and business students have a chance to practice hands-on investment training with a quarter of a million dollars in actual money in the investment and service learning lab. How cool is that?

They are so willing to take risks, um, they're just sort of willing to kind of put it out there and give it a try, and I think you can do that if you set up a safe environment for people, and I think we've done that.

That offer what I call [speaking French] or the French Table. Every semester I have a couple of my office hours a week I spend in the cafeteria in the student center, and students can just come and speak French in a casual setting.

Over 89 percent of the tenured faculty have a Ph. D. or a terminal degree in their field.

So far, my professors have been pretty hands on, and it's all, it's not just watching, it's doing here at SUU, and that's one thing I really enjoy, is like, I can't learn without doing something, and I feel like a lot of the professors realize that, and they actually have us do things to learn.

17 men's and women's Thunderbird athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division One level, in the Summit League.

Friday's the day to get the red out. At the end of every school week, students deck themselves out in school colors to show off their Southern Utah spirit.

SUU housing offers 4 residence halls, and 80 percent of students live on or close to campus.

I came by myself and I didn't think I'd make friends at all, and I made them right off the bat.

Living on campus really shows you like a lot, like you know everyone and everybody tries to be friends.

With nearly 150 student based organizations, SUU truly has a club for every interest.

All the world's a stage, and we are merely players. SUU hosts the Tony Award winning Utah Shakespearean Festival. There's even a Globe replica theater located in the heart of campus.

The Shakespearean Festival is a great connection for us, because first of all, it's a professional equity acting company, and to have a professional acting company on your campus is pretty rare. There's opportunities for lots of different things for our students to do over there, and then, then that's led to several careers for people who have gone into either design, or production, or acting and directing, from that experience here at the festival.

I bet you didn't know that Southern Utah University is home to the Utah Summer Games, which are one of the most successful Olympic style athletic competitions in the nation.
