Southeastern Louisiana University is located on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain in the city of Hammond. It's just an hour's drive away from both New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

I would say coming here to Southeastern, it was exciting because it truly is a jewel in the state of Louisiana. It's a very comfortable setting. And once you get on campus, seeing how the city size and the campus size mesh together.

Southeastern is located on 364 acres landscaped with moss-laden oak trees and towering pines. Nearly 60 buildings are on campus, ranging from historic art deco style architecture to modern residential facilities with all the amenities you would hope for in a university.

This is not your average collegiate fountain. It's a memorial dedicated to Hurricane Katrina and Rita. Because of Southeastern's close proximity to New Orleans and the coast, they strive every day to continuously help rebuild the communities that make Louisiana so great.

Southeastern has an enrollment of approximately 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students and ranks as the third largest university in the state. Southeastern enrolls nearly 200 students from more than 60 foreign nations with a gender makeup of 65% women to 35% men representing 46 of the 50 states.

In order to be admitted to the university, a student has to take the core classes in high school, which are the TOPS or the Regents' core classes. After that we look at a series of things. They must have a 20 on the ACT or be in the top 50% of their graduating class or have a 2.0 grade point average.

Typical cost for full-time in-state students include tuition and fees of about $4,300 per year. Additional fees are required for non-residents. Room and board for those who choose to live on campus is about $6,000 per year.

We actually have over 77 degree programs here at the university. Most prominently known are areas of business, education and nursing. I think when students are looking for majors in those areas, we're highly known for excellence in those areas.

One of the strongest majors on campus is the School of Nursing and they've been named the Louisiana Nursing Program of the Year three times in the last six years.

Plus, members of the faculty have even gotten awards for their teaching and their research projects.

Southeastern has more than 500 full-time faculty. The majority have a terminal degree. Southeastern faculty rank among the best in the country with nationally recognized experts in the fields of economics, ecommerce, history, biological sciences and physics.

The faculty really take a strong role in advising and mentoring students. The faculty, from the very beginning when the students set foot on campus all the way to when they finish, are very involved with their activities. And I've never seen such an amazing faculty in that sense.

They make you feel like you're one in a million, not one of a million. And they're very -- they treat you like you're a person and that you're very important here.

If students want personal attention, they will find it here. We are not a university that doesn't know your name. We're not a university that just gets to know your student number and you're not just a seat in a big lecture auditorium.

Other universities around the country are not going to be as caring, as dedicated as our faculty and staff here at Southeastern. And I really think that's what makes people stay is because they like the Southern hospitality and there's no better place with Southern hospitality than right here at Southeastern.

The Southeastern Lions compete in the NCAA Division I Southland Conference with 16 men's and women's teams. Since joining the Conference, Southeastern has produced 15 Conference championship teams with more than 170 athletes earning All-Conference honors.

With 44% of new freshmen living on campus, Southeastern has housing available for up to 2,300 students. Facilities feature private and shared rooms in apartment-style units. The Lion Track, Southeastern's shuttle service, can take you all around campus.

We have over a hundred student organizations that range from sororities and even honors clubs. I am in a sorority. I'm a member of Phi Nu, as well as an Orientation Leader and a Southeastern Ambassador.

Or participate in activities with the student newspaper, The Lion's Roar, KSLU Radio or the university's own cable TV station, the Southeastern Channel.

During the spring we have Strawberry Jubilee, which is where we cut the big cake and we celebrate and everyone comes out. There's a mechanical bull and we have strawberry eating contests, which are pretty interesting. And there's also Water Days, where they go out and we have water balloon fights and slip-n-slides and it's really fun.

Want to save some serious cash? Well, why not rent your textbooks? Southeastern University is one of only a few universities in the country that has a textbook rental program. You pay a small fee at the beginning of the semester and then you return the books at the end of the term.

Plan to graduate in four years? The Progression Scholarship rewards students that make steady progress toward completing their degrees on time by giving them scholarships equal to a percentage of their tuition and fees, 10% for sophomores, 30% for juniors, and 50% for seniors.
