If you consider yourself to be the creative type, then you're tuning in just in time for our tour of Skidmore College. I'm Ferrari St. Paul and this is University TV. Let's check out the school where the campus culture is creative thought matters.

Skidmore is located in Saratoga Springs, New York. A lively city with a strong sense of history and culture. New York's scenic Adirondack, the Berkshires in Massachusetts and Vermont's green mountains features skiing and hiking opportunities and all fall within a two hour drive.

Want to make a bet? Try your luck at the Saratoga racetrack just down the street from Skidmore, you'll find the oldest thoroughbred racetrack in the country. Who knows, maybe an exacta or a trifecta could be in your future. Come on, I'll race you!

Situated on an expansive 890 acre wooded area a mile from downtown Saratoga Springs, Skidmore's campus offers buildings that are designed and arranged to blend with the wooded surroundings. Though the structures are contemporary in style, the campus designers have borrowed from the area's Victorian architecture. Adopting such features as bay windows, copper roofs and covered outdoor areas.

Saratoga Springs is an outstanding place. Most students and I'm sure you've heard this from students you've interviewed, they try to spend at least one summer here. The summer culture is fascinating and very eccentric and wonderful. You've got the track and New York City Ballet. You've got the Philly orchestra.

There are approximately 2400 students enrolled at Skidmore from 44 states and 32 countries. 41 percent are men, 59 percent are women and 17 percent are minority students. The student to faculty ratio is a very low 9 to 1 with an average class size of just 16. Incoming freshman are required to have an SAT or ACT with writing component. And an SAT subject test is recommended. The median SAT score for admitted students is 1320. The average cost for all full-time students is roughly 50,000 dollars a year, including tuition and fees and on-campus room and board. Out of pocket expense for books, travel and personal items are extra. Don't worry, wipe that sweat off your brow. Skidmore awards approximately 55 percent of students some form of financial aid. The average first year package is 33,000 dollars. Skidmore offers 65 majors and many special academic options. Double majors as well as individual minors are commonplace. Just a few favorites are management and business, psychology, English, government, art and foreign languages.

Biology students have a natural laboratory right in their backyard. This simulated Adirondack water wall shows ecosystems representing three nearby lakes.

Skidmore takes a unique approach to the liberal arts curriculum. Combining traditional disciplines with career specific fields such as management and business, social work, education and exercise science.

The way things are interdisciplinary, it's really manageable to major in business and studio art, music and math. So it's pretty cool that students have that kind of freedom to do what they want.

As you can see behind me, I think one of the most unique opportunities are for the research. Students, well before their senior year can engage in all different levels of different types of research. Not only working with human believe it or not, but exercise science they have a very unique opportunity to work in laboratories using animals as well. So it's a very eclectic research experience that students engage in. and many times early on, not just until they're seniors as it is at most schools, but they have opportunities coming in as freshmen to engage in high level research. So it's pretty cool.

Skidmore employs 241 full-time faculty members. Eighty-two percent hold their doctoral or highest degree in their field. Plus, many have our national and international recognition from Guggenheim, Pulitzer and Emmy Awards to major fellowships and grants. Including Fulbright, McArthur and even the Andy Warhol foundation. At Skidmore, thoroughbreds compete in 19 varsity sports at the NCAA Division III level.

Hit your pillow or maybe just lay your head down nicely at one of the eight residence halls or two apartment complexes here at Skidmore.

The dorms are pretty spacious. Pretty big actually. They're all carpeted which is nice. It's kind of suite style so you have a double single, double single and in between you have a bathroom that about six of you share.

Skidmore has approximately 100 student clubs and organizations, numerous performance opportunities, excellent recreation, health and wellness programming and more than 1,000 annual events. Skidmore is home to several unique types of exercise science research equipment. It's the only small liberal arts college in the country with the [inaudible] body machine that measures bone density.

And students use this indirect calorimeter to measure the amount and type of calories that a person burns.
