Hey guys! I'm Ferrari St. Paul and you are tuning into University TV, where we've put you in University. Today we're taking a tour of Santa Clara University. Let's go.
Santa Clara University is located in Silicon Valley, just 40 miles from San Francisco. This past weekend I was up in Tahoe snowboarding with some friends. Tomorrow I'm going to have a bonfire at the beach with a bunch of my friends. Some of the nice things about Santa Clara, it's centrally located in such a way that we have access to the beach, to the mountains and to the big cities. The location of Santa Clara allows our students to have access to unlimited opportunities. A lot of people hire from Santa Clara although it's a small college. The university is 106 acres of extensive green space and California mission-style architecture, with historic rose gardens and palm trees sprawling between the residential buildings. The university consists of about 5,000 undergraduate students. Forty-four percent men and 56 percent women who come from 38 states, 21 foreign countries and 45 percent are out-of-staters. If you're considering an education at Santa Clara, you need a high school GPA of about 3 point 5, 2, as well as a verbal SAT score of 597 and a math SAT score of about 615. For Santa Clara to be a good fit, they have to want to be in a place where service and commitment and giving back is sort of the culture. Tuition and fees will cost all students about 35,000 dollars per year, with room and board costing an additional 10,500 dollars per year. Santa Clara offers programs in arts and sciences, business and engineering, plus Masters, PhD and law degrees. Most of the students favor finance, marketing, political science, communication and psychology. The academic excellence is sort of the core of Jesuit education but it's tempered by a commitment to service. What is the point of being an educated person if you're not going to do something that matters to other people? One of the things that really has influenced the last four years has been Santa Clara's Jesuit values and through the various programs and experiences that I've had here, everyone's sort of formulated a different perspective. [ Music ] Interested in art? Stop by the Day's the Same Museum, right on Santa Clara's campus. It houses the university's California history collection. [ Music ] With 524 full-time faculty members at Santa Clara, 89 percent have doctoral or a terminal degree. And more than 50 percent are tenured. One of the marvelous things about the faculty at Santa Clara is that they really do care about the students. Faculty literally bend over backwards to help students out. One of the things I'm always amazed about is on the first day of classes I've had so many faculty members give us their cell phone number and home phone number. I have an 8 am pick-up basketball game that faculty, students and staff play in. They're really willing to go above and beyond to help students out. And so our students oftentimes get to have marvelous experiences that acknowledge how great they are. SCU plays at the NCAA Division I level in the West Coast Conference. With excellent programs in soccer and volleyball, SCU is consistently ranked among the top 10 or 20 teams nationally. Welcome to Buck Shaw Stadium! It's where the, [ Laughter ] Olympic Gold Medalists and former member of the women's national team Brandi Chastain kicked off her soccer career! Ninety-two percent of SCU's students live on-campus. Santa Clara provides 12 on-campus residence halls, broken into residential learning communities where students take courses as a group with the benefit of getting to know the professors and one another. I love the dorm because I live in Campisi and Sanfilippo. I live in Sobrato, which is one of the newer dorms. It's actually a suite-style so I have five others with me. The door's always open, you're always, you don't go to bed until like two and it's just, everyone's always just so you know, hopping around and it's just really fun. A certain set of classes are set aside for freshman in specific dorms and then you get to live with these people and also see them outside in the class setting and it kind of fosters that whole community and you know, introduction to college. Students can choose from more than 100 clubs and organizations. Whether you want to share your interest in Anthropology or go scuba diving, there's likely to be a club that meets your needs. Santa Clara is able to foster an environment where people are really able to take their passions and run with it. Whether it's through programs we already have or whether it's the ability to create programs so that they're able to further pursue those passions. For spring break 12 other business students and I actually spent the week in El Salvador both learning about the economic and business issues that affect the country as well as have an opportunity to live with some of the community members in the rural countryside. So that was a pretty amazing experience. My friend Sam Baker and I actually created that program about a year and a half ago. [ Music ] This bestseller flew off of the shelves and onto the big screen. I bet you didn't know the author of the Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini is a Santa Clara grad. [ Music ] If you're interested in a beautiful campus where you can learn great skills from top of the line professors, be sure to check out Santa Clara University. Well thanks for joining me in Silicon Valley at Santa Clara University. I'm Ferrari St. Paul and I'll see you real soon. [ Music ] |
