Chloe: Hey Youniversity TV watchers. Chloe here at RIT, Rochester Institute of Technology. This is Richie. We're ready to go, huh? Come on. Rochester Institute of Technology is in a suburban neighborhood just minutes from Rochester, New York's third-largest city and within an easy drive of the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York.
[ Background Music ] Chloe: With a four-season climate, Rochester is the perfect place for year-round activities like skiing, hiking, sailing and cycling. [ Background Music ] Chloe: RIT's campus is 1,300 acres with a mixture of park-like settings combined with modern buildings, architectural features and sculptural art work. RIT has 12,000 full-time undergrads with more than 2,000 students of color and 1,300 international students. In addition, over 1,200 deaf and hard-of-hearing students are enrolled, supported by the university's National Technical Institute for the Deaf. 92% of undergraduate classes have less than 50 students and the student to faculty ratio is 14 to 1. We would like to see a student that has at least a B average and higher. The SATs differ a little bit by academic area. I think it's important for students and parents to understand that we are a differential admission policy institution, meaning that we're looking for one particular kind of student for engineering, a different kind of student for photography, and yet a different kind of student for business. Chloe: Tuition for a full-time undergraduate student is approximately $28,000 per year. RIT offers more than 90 undergraduate majors and more than 80 minors. Some favorites among students are art, design and photography, business, computing, medical sciences and engineering. We focus on giving students the best experience they possibly can so they have what we refer to as a [inaudible] resume at the end of their three or four years with us. And essentially that's working with real companies on real projects and really taking all the [inaudible] that they learned from us in the past and making sure that they can apply that in the real world. The RIT is real famous for their co-op program and Rochester's a great place. We've got Kodak, Thompson West, like I was saying all over the place. Everyone's familiar with our co-op program here. So we have a lot of partnerships between the companies and RIT and so they kind of hike all the students up. About 70% of our academic programs require cooperative education as a part of the degree program. And for those students, they actually go out on several different work experiences. They're paid experiences. They're not paying tuition while they're out so they can earn money to help defray the costs of education. And it doesn't have to be here. It really can be anywhere in the country or the world if we can get it arranged. The students are responsible for part of that arrangement, but it gives them a chance to go out and get working and test out their field. Chloe: As early as freshman year, RIT students get access to the best research facilities. What you're looking at is the largest microelectronic lab on a university campus. Now as for what I'm wearing, it's called a bunny suit and it keeps me from contaminating the lab. RIT has approximately 820 full-time professors. They're always willing to help and we have their cell phone numbers, their home numbers. I've actually had my research professor meet with my parents. We had like barbeques. And they're really available to all the students. They want to get to know you. They want you to be successful. That's why they're here and that's their main concern. So they've been fantastic. [ Background Misic ] Chloe: The RIT Tigers have 24 men's and women's varsity teams which compete in the Division III level of the NCAA, except for the men's hockey team, which is Division I. [ Hockey Announcer and Cheering ] Chloe: All right Richie. Show me what you've got. Nice. RIT offers students 13 residence halls, five university apartment complexes and housing for graduate students and upper classmen to make their home away from home. During freshman year when you first get here, they have this week of welcome, which is an orientation type of thing. They have the local bands come in, live music, comedians, all kinds of great stuff to show up to. Outside of that, all throughout the year the residence halls, the Residence Life Association is the organization that kind of runs everything. They put on all kinds of events from, you know, they go whitewater rafting trips to Darien Lake to Buffalo. They take people everywhere, they do everything, they buy you ice cream. I mean, it's awesome. Chloe: RIT has more than 175 student clubs and organizations and right now I'm getting ready to meet a member of the RIT NTIV Dance Company. [ Background Music ] Chloe: Hey. Hi. Chloe: I'm Chloe. Nice to meet you. Tiffany, nice to meet you. Chloe: Cool. So what year are you? I'm a fourth year. Chloe: How long have you been with the dance company? I've been with the dance company since freshman year so this will be my fourth year. Chloe: Very cool. What kind of stuff are you guys up to now? What kind of shows have you been doing? In the past we did Pinocchio my freshman year. We did the show called Handimation [assumed spelling]. It was a really cool collaboration with sign language and dance. Chloe: And if you're looking for a good time off campus, you can always find fun at the Club House. You can go mini-golfing. You can even go go-cart racing. And that's where I'm going next. Get in there. Thank you. I think I'm good. Let's go. [ Background Music ] [ Background Voice Counting Down and Music ] Chloe: No freshman 15 for Jarrod Wheatstone [assumed spelling] when he flew aboard NASA's Weightless Wonder, the vomit comet, a C9 aircraft that climbs to a 45 degree angle before nose diving back to earth simulating zero gravity. So we're back on campus and we're almost ready to go but I have one thing to tell you. If you rub Richie's head, the bronze Richie's head, you get a B on exams. But, rumor has it if you rub his belly, you're certain to get an A. Oh, and here's Richie. And I'm out. So I'll see you later. Chloe for Youniversity TV. Bye. |
