[background music] What's up? I'm Ferrari St. Paul and this is Youniversity TV where we put you in University. Today we're here at Point Loma Nazarene University, the closest University to the beach in the state of California. Let's go on a tour. Point Loma is a private Christian University located on the Pacific Coast, 10 minutes from downtown San Diego and only an hour and a half from the mountains and Disney Land.

We have close proximity to downtown, old town, Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, Sea World, La Jolla, Mission Beach, we're within 15 minutes from every one of those places. San Diego, I can't think of a better city to really go to school in in terms of just having fun, enjoying the weekend. There's really a lot to do here.

With 92 acres of ocean front property on the beautiful Point Loma campus, you're likely to catch some rays in between classes, not to mention some of the great views of the school itself. Here it is folks, PLNU's trademark. The historical Green amphitheatre built in 1901 making it the first of its kind in the U.S. This amphitheatre marks the beginning and the end of the spiritual and academic journey for students as they gather here for orientation and graduation ceremonies. With a low 2,300 undergraduates on campus, Point Loma students have a unique opportunity to really get to know classmates as well as peers outside of the classroom. With close to 2,000 applicants and only 550 accepted freshmen each year, PLNU is fairly selected in their admission process. Just to give you an idea of what it takes to get in, accepted students average a 3.72 GPA and about a 550 SAT score in each of the three sections. Point Loma's tuition with room and board runs about $31,000 a year for all students, making it one of the most affordable private schools in Southern California, plus they even offer full tuition scholarships. If you don't have a major picked yet, no problem. PLNU has 65 different areas of study.

We're definitely known for nursing in the Southern California area. Business is big here as well, communication, psychology and education.

In the Business School our belief is that ethics and character and integrity are not things that you can add on but they should be part of the DNA of who we are. So we don't have a separate ethics course. We teach ethics in character and integrity within every discipline.

Study abroad is also something that we have here at Point Loma that about 30% of our students actually partake in.

We take PLNU students to London for the entire semester. So for those 15, 16 weeks we'll be living in residence with 21 PLNU students in the city of London and we'll be going to plays, we'll be traveling all over the British Isles. We also have a -- the art department here does a Paris program and the University by and large as undergraduates want the students to have as many as possible, at least 1 opportunity of living abroad.

Point Loma has 177 fulltime faculty members and of those, 73% have terminal degrees.

You get to know your professors just on a more personal basis and they just really care about how your progress is and fits your academic life as well as your spiritual life.

They check up on me, I check up on them and they just like actually care about you and want you to do well.

Point Loma houses 14 competitive Sea Lion athletic teams which compete at the NAIA level. Want to live on campus? Is so, PLNU has 7 men's and women's residence halls plus an on campus apartment complex. Hang 10 at point Loma. Here students can step out of their slippers and into the sand, literally. Young Hall was even rated the best surf dorm by surfing magazine. So whether it's the surf club or surf class, students are always catching waves. And if you're like me and you need a little bit of practice, you can take free lessons.

Paddle, stand up, have your foot on the paddle. [laughter]

I really enjoyed my fall freshman year. They have all freshmen on one side and then the other half is sophomores so I feel like they are almost like our mentors.

RA's typically they deal with students personal life, spiritual life, physical, academic, whenever they need help to be there to counsel with, just being a friend.

I think it's really easy for freshman to get involved. There's so many opportunities in clubs and organizations.

Ranging from the number 1 U.S. speech and debate team to a Hawaii Club. [inaudible background talking] So I snuck in here to a debate practice. After hearing about Point Loma's speech and debate team, I had to check out the national champions for myself.

Don't you think the conditions that you proposed are going to cause more problems for the United States in the long run than it's actually going to be for any help for the economy?

No, in the short term maybe it will have some negative economic effects but in the long term

Things are getting a little heated in here. [noise]

There's over 20 student ministries here at Point Loma. We also like to go overseas. There's something we have called LoveWorks and it's centered on short term mission trips. Last summer we actually went to 16 different countries.

Got an internship yet? If not, don't worry. Recent Point Loma students have held internships with such prestigious businesses as Sea World, The San Diego Padre's and Charger athletic trainers, the county of San Diego, the Mayor's office and more. So if you're looking for an educational experience filled with the benefits of high caliber academics, personal attention and spiritual growth, then Point Loma Nazarene University may just be for you. Thanks for joining us here in San Diego, California on our tour of Point Loma Nazarene University. I'm Ferrari St. Paul and I'm going to go put my new surfing skills to the test. I'll see you out there.
