Hey what's up Youniversity TV watchers? Today we're at Penn State Behrend. I'm Nicole Aaron. [phonetic]
And I'm Shania Dean. [phonetic] Can you guys believe that Penn State Behrend used to be a farm? Over 60 years ago Mary Behrend donated her Glenn Hills Farm to Penn State University. Sound's pretty cool. Let's check it out. Penn State Behrend is located in Erie, Pennsylvania on the southern shores of the lake. Crest Isle [phonetic] State Park is the town's premier attraction with 7 miles of sandy beaches, fishing, boating, biking, and inline skating to enjoy. The four seasons kind of community. Great summers. We're renowned for our sunsets. But also great winter activities for us. So in winter there's plenty to do. People don't just come shut in for the winter. Behrend's 725 acre campus is a designated arborrehedum [phonetic] by the American Public Garden Association. And campuses home to an extraordinary collection of native and exotic trees. There's over 175 species in all. A lot of people when they come to visit Penn State Behrend are just awed by the beauty of the campus. It's really one of our Hallmarks is the campus beauty. Knowledge Park is 200 acres of business commons on the southeastern edge of campus. It's home to companies that are willing to offer students the opportunities in research, internships, and employment. I think the opportunities to do undergraduate research really is something to prepare me for life after Behrend, because I plan to go to graduate school. And I think it'll really strengthen my application of showing that I can see a research project from start to finish. And then present it at a national conference, or even have it published. There are more than 4,400 undergraduates and graduate students enrolled at Penn State Behrend, making it the second largest location in the Penn State system. Students come from 35 states and territories, and 28 countries. The student to faculty ratio is 16 to 1, and the average class size is 26. The middle 50% of students admitted into Penn State Behrend have a high school GPA between 3.1 and 3.6, and an SAT score between 1610 and 1830. Tuition average is $12,000 a year for Pennsylvania residents, and $18,000 for out of state students. Penn State Behrend offers more than 40 programs across 4 schools. Some top student picks are mechanical engineering, psychology, biology, management, and marketing. Plastics engineering technology is one of only four accredited programs in the country. I'm here with Ralph Ford, [phonetic] who's gonna tell me a little bit more about the program. Well welcome to our plastics lab. So what are we looking at here? You're looking at a blow-molding machine. What's different about this is that this technology we create products that you're actually quite familiar with, like shampoo bottles, milk bottles, and so forth. And you take a piece of plastic that's already preformed, and then you heat it up, and you put it in here, and you fill it with air. So, and the mold splashes around it, blows up, if you can imagine that, inside, collapses around, and creates the product. Penn State Behrend introduced cross-disciplinary partnership in courses, projects, and outreach initiatives by creating one of the first schools in the nation that combines the school of business and engineering together under a single roof. Good. You can't get much more hands on experience than this. Nursing students at Behrend get to learn from these smart dummies. They even make real human physiological functions, and they can respond. Giving these future healthcare professionals a taste of what's to come. Penn State Behrend has more than 275 faculty members. 225 are full time. The strength of this institution is its faculty and staff. I always says it's, it's about our people, and the strength of this school is its people. And we have very accomplished faculty, very strong staff, and I'm very proud of them. The Penn State Behrend Lions compete in the NCAA Division 3 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, and the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Lions have captured the ANCC President Cup 7 times. Penn State Behrend offers 18 housing options, including 3 traditional style residence halls, 6 leap styles, and 9 building set up as apartments for juniors and senior only. Everybody on my hall was very nice. My RA was very helpful. And I love the rooms there. That's what, [inaudible] live on campus. It's spacious. And you have a little kitchen area, and your own bathroom. The Battle of Lake Erie 1812 against the British was a huge turning point for the United States and an important part of Erie's history. Therefore the residence halls here are all named after commanders and ships from the battle. There are more than 100 clubs and organizations, including nationally recognized social fraternities and sororities, academic and arts organizations, multicultural organizations, and service clubs. If you like to mix business with pleasure, get a top-notch education, and spend your downtime become one with nature at Penn State Erie's the Behrend College. Good bye from Erie, Pennsylvania. Stay tuned for more adventures from us and Youniversity TV. |
