What's up guys, I'm Ferrari St. Paul and this is Youniversity TV. Welcome to Vegas baby, Las Vegas, New Mexico that is, home of New Mexico Highlands University. New Mexico Highlands University is in Northern New Mexico's very own Las Vegas.
It is a beautiful area. We've got two lakes that are very close, Storrie Lake which right outside of town about 5 minutes. It's really well known for wind surfing across the world. We also have McAlister Lake so there is nice boating and fishing available. So there's really a lot to do recreational in this area. There's a lot of things to do outdoors like hiking, fishing, snowboard, ski, ride bikes. We have the hot springs. They're free. They're just up the road in Montezuma. You can go fishing in the Gallinas River. You can go hiking up in the Gallinas Canyon. In Taos we have the pueblo festivities, in Santa Fe we have our very local fiestas and whatnot. We have three ski resorts, Santa Fe, Taos and Sipapu and students get to go for free if you have a high GPA. So it pays to be smart. You can follow the Santa Fe Trail right to campus. NMHU is located along one of the original routes pioneers use as they made their way west. New Mexico Highlands campus captures that small town feel with Hispanic and Native American communities keeping the history of the region alive. New Mexico Highlands is a small school with a wide array of students. There are students from 20 different countries. This flagship of the university contains flags in every student's home country like Korea, Japan, Canada and more. While other colleges and universities talk about diversity, New Mexico Highlands lives it with more than 50 percent of Hispanic students and kids from 20 countries. There are 38 percent men to a large population of women at 62 percent. You'd be surprise that you come in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico and find people from Cameroon or Ethiopia or Korea. I have a good buddy from Nepal. And so it's just a great, it's just great to know that you can learn from other people and learn where they're from without necessarily having to leave the state because not everybody has an opportunity to travel. We have an open admissions policy so basically as long as a student graduates with the proper GPA from their school and submits an ACT score, they can get admitted. If they do not have any ACT score we can offer our own state test. The GPA is 2.0 or higher and the ACT we just need a score for placement. In-staying students will pay approximately 8,500 dollars per year in tuition, housing, books, and room and board. Those coming from out of state will be required to pay around 10,000 dollars. NMHU offers 34 undergraduate and 11 graduate degrees in the arts and sciences, business, education, and social work. We have the only forestry program in the State of New Mexico. We have the largest social program in the state. We have one of the largest teaching programs in the state, natural resources as well, so there's a lot that we do here that's, you know, you can really touch here. New Mexico Highlands School of Education has an excellent reputation for over 115 years as a teachers college. The university's school of social work is also highly recognized, so much so that the students commute from as far as Denver to be a part of the program. New Mexico Highlands employs 76 fulltime faculty members, 98 percent hold a PhD or a terminal degree. You get a one-on-one interaction with your professors and a lot of the larger schools, the programs, you're working with grad students and so forth, and here I mean you're performing with your professors and working closely with them every week. And that's a kind of personal attention that's hard to find. The New Mexico Highland Cowboys compete in the NCAA division 3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, "cheat to win." [Laughter] We know that former WWE Champion Eddie Guerrero who wrestled on an athletic scholarship at Highland didn't learn his catch phrase at the university. He knew better than that. [ Cheering ] NMHU not only provides housing for the traditional incoming freshmen but also for senior graduate and even special student housing for those with families. Stayed in Melody Hall, the all-girls dorm for 2 years and it's a really good dorm. They have real big rooms and the bathrooms are not community bathrooms so you pretty much have your own bathroom to yourself. [ Background Music ] There are all kinds of things you can get involved in here. They may even have their own mariachi band. We have everything from student senate to student ambassadors to our black students association to our salsa club. We just have, we really have everything. NMHU's Department of Science houses some of the latest technology in the United States with one of a kind crystal growth apparatus and x-ray equipment. Let's check out this crystal up close. How cool is that? So if you're looking for a state of the art multicultural college, check out New Mexico Highlands University at NMHU.edu for more details. Thanks for hanging out with us here in Las Vegas, New Mexico on our tour of New Mexico Highlands University. I'm Ferrari St. Paul saying so long from the southwest.
