Hey, what’s up, I’m Nicole Aaron and this is YOUniversity TV. Today we’re at University of Nebraska at Kearney. Come join us on our campus tour. UNK is located in Kearney, Nebraska, which is in the south central part of the state and has a population of nearly 29,000. There’s lots to do in Kearney, including shopping, award winning restaurants, plus culture and entertainment available to students. UNK is directly in the middle of the United States. Both Boston and San Francisco are just roughly 1,700 miles away. The University of Nebraska at Kearney sits on a 235 acre residential campus with more than 37 buildings. UNK has nearly 6,500 students with nearly 5,500 undergraduates. Students come from 40 states and 40 different countries. All over campus I’ve noticed these blue and gold flags. What do they represent to students here? Well they are actually put up right at the beginning of school and it symbolizes the kickoff of the school year. And they’re also up during what's called our Blue and Gold Showcase, which happens the Friday right before classes and the day the rest of the campus moves back into the residence halls. Freshmen seeking admission to UNK need 16 required high school classes and should be ranked in the top half of their class. They should also have a score of 20 or higher on the ACT or have a score of 950 or higher on their SAT. Tuition for in-state students is $11,000 per year and $15,500 for out-of-state students, making UNK one of the more affordable schools in the region. Students at UNK have a lot of choices when it comes to their future with 170 programs, 25 pre-professional programs and 34 graduate programs. UNK has a real strong undergraduate research program. We have what’s called the Summer Student Research Program. Students apply to get accepted in the program and then, in essence, they’re paid by the university to do a research project over the summer. Some of the more popular majors include graphic arts, industrial technology, pre-med, biology, chemistry, speech and hearing disorders, accounting, education, and computer science and information technology, all of which have a nearly 100% job placement rate. One of the things the students say that they like is that they really try and not just make it theory, but give them practical examples. And we have a Nebraska Kids’ Fitness and Nutrition Day. 600 fourth graders come to UNK one day in the fall and our students get to help teach them about nutrition and physical activity. Kearney has over 300 full time faculty members and a low student to teacher ratio of just 16:1. An impressive 90% of faculty members have a PhD or the highest degree in their field. We hear it all the time when recruiters and things come to campus that that’s one thing that we constantly hear is that, “Your faculty, I can just tell they care so much more about you guys.” And uh, you know, I have a, I have a professor, Mr. Yoakum and he knows every single person in our major. There’s over 200 of us in our major and he knows every one of their names. More than a third of UNK students choose to live on campus in one of 13 different housing options. Residence halls help make the transition to college easier with features like recreation areas, lounges, and computer labs. 16 Loper athletic teams compete in the Division II level of the Rocky Mountain Conference. We’re gonna take a jog with some of the track team members. You ready, guys? Yup. Let’s go. UNK is home of the Antelopes, a.k.a. Lopers. What up, Louie? Academics are a very important part to athletic life. All 16 teams have a 3.0 GPA or higher. With over 160 student organizations on campus, there’s plenty of choices for UNK students. If you choose to wander off campus, Kearney has minor league hockey and basketball teams as well as outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, or golfing, just to name a few. There are many groups and organizations on campus. Let me introduce to you the Pride of the Plains drum line. Did you know that 25% to 30% of all teachers, school administrators, speech pathologists, school counselors, and school psychologists in Nebraska are UNK graduates? The companies who come here to recruit like the work ethic they find and the values that are here that you find in the Midwest. And that we keep hearing over and over. The work ethic here is different. And they like that. If you’re looking for a close-knit, medium-sized university that features great educational opportunities and a fun environment, be sure to check out the University of Nebraska at Kearney today. Thanks for joining us here in Kearney, Nebraska on our tour of UNK. I’m Nicole Aaron and goodbye for now. YOUniversityTV maintains all editorial control on videos produced by YOUniversityTV.
