Video Tour Transcript:
Greetings from New York, I'm Levon Harvey [phonetic]. We're getting an exclusive tour of Manhattanville College, home of the Valiants. I'm standing here in front of the castle right now. It's the most historic landmark on campus. Couldn't ask for a better spot to start our tour, let's go.
Manhattanville College is sitting in beautiful Westchester County, just 30 minutes from New York City. I like the fact that we're not right in the middle of downtown Manhattan because you can retreat to the community and have a little bit more of a safe haven. It's also very green, so we have no notion that just 30 minutes away you have the hustle and bustle of downtown. Manhattanville's campus is located within 100 historical acres featuring a remarkable castle. The campus is beautiful, the castle of course is one of the perks, and then the gardens and everything. And it's also in the middle of Westchester and less than an hour to the city, so it's an opportune for anybody. These supernatural secrets, legend has it that this historic 19th century castle is haunted by children who used to live here. Students say after midnight they can see flickering lights from the 4th floor. I'll be right back. [Children laughing] The college campus grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the same man who designed Central Park in New York City. The Princeton Review writes Manhattanville the 11th most diverse campus in the nation. 2800 students including 1600 undergraduates come from 76 countries and 50 states, 40 percent are male, 60 percent are female, and 20 percent are international. It's pretty diverse. It helps you to get acclimatized to different peoples and to get to know and to actually like things that you had never thought you'd like in the past. MC is looking for students who have B average, and above an SAT score of at least 1100 in critical reading and math combined. Try to view the student of a slightly more holistic approach. We have the ability as a smaller college to actually take everything into consideration. Academic average, community involvement is really important for us as well as letters of recommendation. The cost of attendance including tuition and fees is about 32,000 dollars, the room and board fees an additional 13,000 dollars. Well actually I love the financial aid office here. I transferred from another school and they gave me a package for, from my transfer school to come here 'cause I had a really good agreement between the two so. Manhattanville offers more than 50 undergraduate degrees, leading to Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music and various dual degrees and accelerated studies programs. Some of the most common among students are finance, education, psychology, music, communications and dance and theater. I think what's most important to understand is that it is really a university that focuses on every facet of the student. There's academic services, there's community services, there's social services, really the focus is on developing the whole student. And I think what's really nice is the college is really interested in making sure high school students transition to college. And then the student-run radio station is ranked high among colleges. In fact, it was in the top 20 for the best student-run radio stations by The Princeton Review. The best part is it doesn't matter what your major is, anybody can be a DJ. Hello everyone, tune in to 88.1 here at Manhattanville College. There are more than 100 fulltime faculty members, all of them hold a PhD or terminal a degree, and 95 percent have their doctorate. 80 percent of the classes have 20 students or less, and the student to faculty ratio was 12 to 1. For freshmen coming in, one of the 5 courses they take is called our prefatorial [phonetic], it's a freshman seminar. One of its virtues is that the professor teaching it is also the academic adviser of the student. So student and adviser cannot be strangers. I got to talk to one of the visiting advising counselors and they're actually engaging and interested in you. So I felt like at this small college I could actually belong. The Manhattanville Valiants compete in the NCAA division 3 ECAC West, ECAC East, Freedom, and Middle-Atlantic Conference. Both the men's and women's hockey teams are nationally ranked top 5 within their division. The faculty actually lives on campus along with the president who lives in this cottage, now that's dedication. There are 4 [inaudible] residence halls available on campus, 2 buildings are [inaudible] housing and 2 dorms offer single, double, triple, and quad living. Our mascot is the Valiant. We're division 3 in sports, and for the most popular probably is like hockey and soccer. MC offers over 50 organized clubs, school-sponsored weekly cultural and athletic events. And Manhattanville traditions include Quad Jam, international bazaar, and midnight brunch. Our president always talks about the number of hours that the students have participated with community service and I know that the current number is 30,000 hours. And so that says it all because he really has pushed getting the students involved in different types of service activities. When the matriarch of the Kennedy Clan, Rose Kennedy mother of John, Bobby and Teddy got her degree here at Manhattanville College, little did she know she would one day be the proud parent of the United States President. When you're at Manhattanville College, you can give back. Join the My Soldier program. It was started by an alum who have served in Iraq. Students get a chance to communicate with soldiers, to carry packages and letters. So say can you see, yourself here at Manhattanville College. Not only is this institution rich in creativity and academics, it's also easy on the eyes. Well guys, that's it for now. This school has got it all, great faculty, tons of majors to choose from, and lots of opportunities to get you involved. Come see for yourself. For Youniversity TV, I'm Levon, catch you later.
