Hey everyone thanks for tuning in to Youniversity TV. I'm Jessica. Welcome to LSU Shreveport. We are kicking off this tour in the Circle of Excellence. It's a popular place for students to hang out and relax. But right now, we've got lots to see. So let's kick off our tour.

Louisiana State University in Shreveport is located in Shreveport-Bossier metropolitan area.

Around town we have a lot. One of the newest things we've added is the Boardwalk. It's an outside shopping center. It's a lot of fun. If you like going to like a mall but it's outside. We have the CenturyTel with concerts coming here all the time.

The LSUS campus is located on 258 acres of land, highlighted by crape-myrtles that shade the concrete walkways connecting the campus building. LSUS enrolls more than 4,000 students, 36 percent male and 64 percent female; 26 percent are of diverse backgrounds and 92 percent are from within the State of Louisiana.

Primarily our students come from Louisiana although we have a number of students now coming from East Texas and Southern Arkansas because we're really located in the Ark-La-Tex region as we call it.

We have a really diverse and interesting population here. The class that I just got out of actually has incoming freshmen, 18-year-old freshmen right out of high school and graduating seniors, students older than I am, and students 17 years old sitting in one class. So it's a very diverse group which is really spectacular.

So we're here in the University Center, what can students come here and do?

Okay, one of the coolest things we have is the university Wide Lab, which has about over 60 computers and free access for all the students. And one of the coolest thing is free printing which should be for us college students, so that's really cool.

So everybody comes in there and--

Yeah, open till 12 midnight.

Nice.

Students looking to be admitted into LSU Shreveport need a high school GPA of at least 2.0, ranking the top 50 percent of their graduating class or have an ACT composite score of 20 or greater.

For incoming freshmen if you've graduated from a Louisiana high school, there are several criteria. You have to take the--and complete the top score curriculum which is set by the board of regions. You also have to have a need for no more than one remedial course and that's done by--determined by your ACT or SAT score.

Instate students will pay around 4,000 dollars a year, while out of staters will pay close to 8,000 dollars.

Ninety percent of our students have financial aid, all payments are given through scholarships. So, there's pretty much of scholarship for almost everything. It's really easy to apply for. There's a bunch of them.

LSU Shreveport offers 36 undergraduate degrees. General Business Administration, Biology, and Psychology are just a few student favorite.

Our most popular major for incoming freshmen is Biology. We have a good working relationship with Louisiana State University Med Center here in Shreveport, which also has a lot of allied health programs such as physical therapy schools. They have PA school and also the medical schools there. So we work very well with them so that we feel like our students know what they expect in order to get into those programs after graduation.

You can be a star here at LSUS. Theater students perform in this black box theater. And the program has veteran Hollywood actor Pruitt Taylor Vince as an artist and resident. He's been on TV shows like Deadwood and House, pretty cool, huh?

There are plenty of resources available for students. Education majors can check out books, games, anything on integrating a lesson plan right here in the Curriculum Resource Center.

LSUS has 160 full-time faculty members and 87 part timers. Fifty-six percent of full timers are tenured, and currently, 77 percent have a terminal degree or PhD.

We have some classes at the freshmen level, introductory level that are probably little more lecture-based. And so, we have the flexibility where when you get to some of the sophomores, junior, senior level classes where it might be a little more hands-on, little more discussion-based, interacting with other students maybe more so than the faculty with some faculty input. But the students at that point, you know, they're trying to integrate everything they've learned. They are able to work more with each other and balance ideas off with each other more. So you get a good mix of different types of teaching styles.

We do have an open door policy, and that open door policy extends again beyond our minimum office hours. Professors are always there willing to help. They are--they're at their desk or they're in the halls wherever the students will like to meet. Professors, they are trying to help as best as they can, trying to solve problems. Not only in terms of the academically or in their classes but in terms of advising. We also do advising for our students. We try to build career class. Help them to develop not only on the academic tenure here but also try to promote a pathway so that they would be successful beyond the classroom or beyond their 4 or how many years they spend at the academic institution.

LSUS has 4 men's and women's teams that compete at the NAIA level and consistently play for championships in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

The University Court Apartments at LSUS is the on-campus housing with a variety of styles including private bedrooms and bathrooms to shared accommodations. There are more than 60 student organizations at LSUS with at least one club associated with each major on campus. Intramural sports offer everything from the new lacrosse program to dodgeball.

Whether it's in the classroom or on the field, you'll definitely find a tightening community waiting for you here at LSU Shreveport. We've had a great time on our tour but now it's time for us to hit the road. So we'll catch you next time for Youniversity TV. I'm Jessica. We're out of here.
