Hey guys, Sheana here
for YOUniversityTV. Welcome to the University of La Verne, a private research university located in southern California. Our tour is starting off right here at the rock, which has been a source of campus pride since the 1950s. Let’s check out the rest. The University of La Verne is located in La Verne, California, about 35 miles east of Los Angeles. The location, of course, our students have very easy access to the beaches, to go mountain skiing, to snowboarding. They have easy access to downtown Los Angeles, the Hollywood Bowl, and many of the other wonderful attractions that make southern California such a great place to live and to go to school. La Verne’s tree lined campus resides on 38 acres and features a mixture of old and contemporary buildings. The school is connected to old town La Verne, which has plenty of local shops, eateries, and it’s really fun to hang out in. The new campus center is here now, it has a pool table, it’s games, it’s TV, it’s just so much you can do on this campus where being nervous is just-- It won’t even--you won’t even get a chance to be nervous because it’s so much stuff to do here. The University of La Verne enrolls approximately 1,600 undergraduate students. Nearly half of undergrads are minority students. The University of La Verne is a common application university. We accept applications on a rolling basis, which means we accept applications throughout the year. Our students are required to submit their high school transcripts, their SAT or ACT scores, a letter of recommendation from someone who knows them from an academic setting, as well as an essay is required. And of course, the application form itself. Tuition for all students runs you just under $30,000 per year, while room and board on average will cost an additional $11,000. More than 90% of students receive some form of financial aid. At the University of La Verne, students are given every opportunity to succeed. Thanks to the First Generation Student Success program, the university lends a hand to students who are the first in their family to attend college through workshops, scholarships, and a mentor program. The University of La Verne offers over 70 different majors. Some of the most popular majors include: Business Administration, Psychology, Liberal Studies, Biology, and Communications. If you think Hollywood’s the place for you, check out La Verne’s Communications Department. Students here get hands-on experience in radio, public relations, television, multimedia, and broadcast journalism. Okay Jeanie, you’re on in three, two... The university’s debate team competes in the world’s largest debating championship and is ranked in the top 20. Wanna see the world? La Verne’s study abroad program goes to over 40 different countries on six continents. Students can stay between a few weeks and an entire year. And the best part is, the cost is the same as living on campus, and students can use their financial aid. Whether you choose to study in countries and do an archeological dig on the Mediterranean, or to go to Europe, or Latin America, study abroad at the University of La Verne is something that many of our students do. I studied abroad in Egypt for about three weeks, and it was probably one of the most incredible experiences in my life. And I know that for a fact that if I hadn’t come to the University of La Verne or gotten a college career, I would’ve never had that experience. There are 187 full-time faculty members at La Verne with an average class size of 16 and a low 11:1 student to faculty ratio. 51% of full-time professors hold their PhD and 82% hold a terminal degree. If students ever have a problem in any of their classes, the first point of contact is the faculty member, the teacher, the professor, who’s gonna take a little bit of extra time and office hours or after class to try to guide ‘em. If they’re still having trouble, we also have a learning enhancement center that you can go to to get help with math tutoring or writing, or really any field at all that you’re struggling with. What initially drew me here was for the small class sizes and the intimate relationships that I’ve heard with professors, with faculty, with other administrators here on campus. And that’s honestly what’s keeping me here too. Our classes are not very big. So they range from somewhere around like, I think my biggest class this semester has 22 in it. Given that, there’s a lot of opportunity for them to have one on one interaction with me before class or after class, and certainly in class because it is a more intimate environment. I feel like being very close to my teachers. I can ask them and talk to them about anything I-- in the--anything I feel like. So with that said, that’s helping me and getting me ready for the real world. Eighteen Leopards men’s and women’s athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division III level in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. I’m headed over to the golf team to see if they can help me out with my swing. They are ranked number two in the nation. And the baseball and volleyball teams have also been dominant in the SCIAC with 18 and 20 conference championships. About half of first year students choose to live on campus. There are three options. There’s two co-ed residence halls and one all female. And if you meet the deadline, housing is guaranteed. I’d get on that if I were you. About 40% of first year students choose to live on campus. There are over 50 student organizations on campus for La Verne students to choose from. In fact, the campus activities board plans more than 100 events each year, including intramurals, films in the park, and concerts. That wraps up our tour here at the University of La Verne. And just a heads up before you get here, the seal is not something you want to mess with. They say if you walk across it, you’ll be here for an extra semester. Which, come to think of it, might not be such a bad thing around here. For YOUniversityTV, I’m Sheana Jeanne and I’ll see you next time!
