Today, we're at Hostra University, which is a competitive and selective midsized private coed institution, which seeks to enroll diverse students with varied interests and talents. Hostra is located in Hempstead, New York, right on Long Island, about an hour from New York City and just 15 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. With things like the Big Apple, shopping, museum and three major airports close by, this university is right in the middle of everything.
I love New York. Hostra is probably the best location for a school because you have the proximity of the city, but you also have Long Island, which has tons of resources. And there's a lot to do. I still after two years of being here have just found out new places to go, so if you're looking for internships or something like that, they're all right there for you. We utilize New York as part of our campus. So students will have the opportunity to not only travel into the city with their faculty and their particular course and explore more in depth let's say art history or the theater or advertising, but also through the kinds of programs we call the explore next door programs, they will have the opportunity to also explore the city and discover areas that they have maybe never been introduced to. Hostra's campus is a 240 acres nationally recognized aubreidum [assumed spelling] containing hundreds of trees, plants and flowers. And in the spring, the campus is blooming with thousands of tulips. Part of the Hostra museum includes outdoor sculptures, which adds to the beauty on campus. I think what attracted me to come to Hostra was the campus. It looked what I thought in my mind from when I was little a college campus would look like. I was really impressed by the faculty and by the facilities the campus had. And I was really impressed by the amount of students who were involved on campus here. Hostra enrolls more than 12000 students. Nearly 8000 of which are undergraduates. Representing 46 states and 56 countries. Women make up about 56% of the population and men make up 44%. So, we're a diverse campus where we have many international students as well as students from across all of the United States. [ Inaudible ] Hostra University is selective in their admissions. For example, in a class of 2010 only 54% of applicants were admitted. The average SAT score for the class of 2011 is 1179, with an average GPA of 3.37 and an amazing 74% of incoming freshmen have a 3.0 or higher. The classes are I would say not more difficult but more intensive. Tuition is the same for all students, running about 26000 per year. Room and board adds about another 9600 dollars. You may be surprised to learn that Hostra offers a ton of programs for both undergrads and graduate students. In fact, there's about 300 different ones to choose from. Hostra University also offers small class sizes with an average of just 24 students per class. So professors get to know their students on a first name basis. Hostra's class sizes are really small and that is awesome because you get to talk to the professor, you get to know everyone's name in your class. You'll be friends with everyone and it's helpful to know people in the class. Some of the most popular majors include psychology, accounting, marketing, management, and finance. And Hostra's legal education accelerated program or LEA allows students to earn a bachelor's degree and a law degree in just six years. Want top quality professors? Hostra University has more than 600 full time faculty members including Pulitzer Prize, Fulbright, and Emmy Award winners. And 90% of them have a PhD or the highest degree attainable. A low student to faculty ratio of just 14 to 1, means that professors are extremely accessible to their students. Hostra fields 18 men's and women's pride athletic teams, which compete at the Division 1 level in Colonial Athletic Association. Hostra's teams have taken home 18 championships in the last 5 years alone. With 37 residence halls, students that choose to live on campus can be close to both classes and professors. While being in the middle of campus life and close to all the action. How's this for cool? Students in the filmmaker's club get to write, shoot, and edit their own films right on campus. Greek life is strong on campus also with 30 different men's, women's, cultural and coed chapters. If you think there's nothing else to do, don't worry. Hostra has over 150 clubs and organizations plus all kinds of social activities geared toward students. Did you know that Hostra's [inaudible] communication houses one of the largest state of the art non-commercial radio and television broadcast facilities in the northeast? Plus they've just opened a state of the art converged newsroom. Pretty impressive, huh? There's a lot of experience you can get on campus. We have radio studios, we have TV studios. We have the facilities here so the student gets real hands on experience and, and they can do it right from the beginning. As far as hands on work here at the university, I've become an active member of WRHU with, from the minute I stepped onto the campus. By the middle of the year, I was reading news, I was reading copy, and by the end of the year into the summer, I was producing news shows. If you're going to be a communications major, there's not a whole lot of places that you can go that are better than here. You combine the opportunities that you have with WRHU where you're basically doing everything that you'd be doing at a professional station right off the bat. It basically just, I mean if you put yourself into something, you're going to be doing some serious work in a hurry, especially at RHU. If you get yourself involved, you're going to be doing things. If that's not enough, Hostra's faculty and graduates include Oscar winning director Francis Foracopola and Joe Gregory, president and COO of Lehman Brothers. Just to name a few. If you're looking for a university with excellent professors that offers a great education on a gorgeous campus, be sure to check out Hostra University. Thanks for joining us here in Hempstead, New York on our tour of Hostra University. I'm Ferrari Saint Paul with Youniversity TV. I will see you later.
