Hey what's up, guys, thanks for watching Youniversity TV; I your host Shanna Jean and today we're a Georgia's Southwestern State University. Let's go for a tour.

Georgia Southwestern State University is located in Americus, Georgia, which is just under three hours South of Atlanta and is named as one of the top ten original cities in the state by Georgia Trend Magazine.

It's a very nice location, great weather, terrific outdoor activities and close to the ocean. There's a bunch of places to hang out around town, we have a movie theater and some really good restaurants. We only a few hours away from Albany and Columbus and Macon so if we ever need to go to a little bit of a bigger town we can always go there.

Thirty five buildings cover Georgia Southwestern State two hundred and twenty five acre campus. Which even features an outdoor science lab to complement the strong science program that the university offers.

Georgia Southwestern enrolls approximately twenty seven hundred students about twenty one hundred of which are undergrads. Women make up roughly sixty three percent of the student body compared to thirty seven percent men.

The reason that I chose to come here was I love the community that I felt was just a small school at Georgia Southwestern, it was just great because I got that one on one interaction with professors instead of just being a number; I was actually a person. Then I just loved the atmosphere, the campus town it was just absolutely awesome.

All students seeking admission to GSW are required to have a college preparatory diploma. The average GPA of incoming freshman is three point four and may average a five hundred in math and five hundred on critical reading on the SAT.

If you look at our tuition and fee structure, we're very competitive with other public schools. I think people to live the idea that we're small enough, we kind of have a private school aura at public school cost so it's a great alternative.

At approximately nine thousand dollars a year including tuition fees and room and board, Georgia Southwestern State University is a great value for Georgia residents. The cost for non-residents runs approximately seventeen thousand dollars per year.

Each year we award about one hundred thousand dollars in undergraduate tuition and support to students who are pursuing careers in the care giving fields, that could be nursing, psychologies, special education.

Georgia Southwestern State University offers forty undergraduate majors and concentrations, plus additional graduate programs. Some of the most popular majors at Georgia Southwestern include education and business.

One of the most exciting things is this new PGM program that we're in the process of getting approved by PGA; it's a Professional Golf Management Program. The other thing of course that we're doing here is increasing the number of international students to create more opportunities for our students. Not only so study abroad but also interact and live with students in some other parts of the world. Our nursing program I think is very important with the RCI, the Rosalyn Carter Institute, Care Giving Program is also important to our future and our ability to create a unique niche among other institutions across the state of Georgia.

As I mentioned earlier GSW has outstanding science programs in Biology and all premedical related fields; Chemistry, Pre Pharmacy and Geology. The university also offers a unique exercise science and wellness program.

If you're looking to get creative, you'll have to check our GSW's Glass Blowing class it's the only educational facility in the state; let's go check it out.

We're the only school in Georgia and one of the few in the country that focus on the particular issues of care giving across the professions. So we're not just focusing on special ED, nursing, psychology, but all of the issues that integrate those fields and I think it's fair to say that we are the leader in care giving on any American campus.

GSW has more than one hundred faculty members and seventy two percent have a PhD or terminal degrees. In addition, a low student to teacher ratio of just sixteen to one makes for a great academic environment.

Professors are readily available, I've actually done some night time tutoring, and they'll schedule summer classes for you if you're a senior to make sure that you graduate on time. I think that's something that you don't get at other universities but you get that here.

Calling all sports fans, eleven hurricane athletic teams compete at the division two level in the powerful Peach Bowl Conference.

GSW students have several options for on campus living including new housing for both freshman and upper classman.

Living in the residence halls is great because you get the sense of getting to know people from different areas.

With over sixty clubs and organizations on campus including community service oriented groups, a Greek life program with thirteen national fraternities and sororities and the great outdoor activities Southwest Georgia has to offer there's never a dull moment for GSW students.

Get involved as soon as you get on campus that's your way of meeting people. This university makes it so easy for the freshman to get involved. I became a part of SGA my first year here. I met a lot of people and it actually helped me to branch out.

Notable GSW alumni are President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalyn Carter. Little did they know back in nineteen forty two when Jimmy was chosen out of hundreds of students to leave his mark on campus that he'd be our future leader.

GSW has one of three seismographs in the state of Georgia and its part of the World Wide Network to measure the earth's seismic activity. In fact, I'm standing above it right now.

If you seek an exciting education at a public university with a private university feel that's ranked of one of the safest in the state, be sure to check out Georgia Southwestern State University. Thanks everyone for joining us he at Georgia Southwestern State University; I'm Shanna, see you next time.
