Hi guys Shana here for Youniversity TV. Today we are at Frostburg State University which was named after the town's founders of the Frost family. Not for its chilly temperatures but I do recommend a scarf for those chilly nights. Frostburg State University is located in the mountains of western Maryland's historic Frostburg. Campus is close to the Whisp ski resort and many state parks. Just hop in the car and in two hours you can be in Pittsburgh, Baltimore or Washington D.C.
There's lots of stuff to do around campus. We have lots of places to eat. We have Gianni's wings which has great wings. In downtown Cumberland there's the Queen City Creamery which has amazing ice cream it is so delicious and decadent it is the best ice cream you will ever taste. We do have a mall and a lot of times like in downtown Cumberland has lots of things like concerts for free. It's really accessible because you can just take the shuttle which is free for students. It's a great community. Great university community and the nearby community to live in, to learn, and to have a family. To come and experience what truly education is all about. Walk this way. And you hit the great Allegheny passage. A 150mile system of biking and hiking trails that connect Cumberland Maryland to Pittsburg Pennsylvania. Frostburg's 260acre campus is centrally located with most buildings within a short walking distance from one another. Plus Frostburg's main street is nearly just as close. And I've heard that at echo circle is a popular hang out on campus. Hello Youniversity TV. FSU's Total enrollment is around 5,000 students from 30 states. 51 percent are male, 49 percent female, and 24 percent are of a minority background. The student to faculty ratio is 17 to 1 with an average class size of 18. The student that comes to Frostburg or ends up loving Frostburg while they are here is the student that is extremely involved and given a chance to, you know, to study abroad, be involved in our theater performances and music performances, take part of student government, be a student athlete. They are just your really well rounded student and if they didn't come to us that way, they are that way when they leave. The average admitted student has a GPA of 3.1 with an average SAT critical reading and math score of 980. Are you an overachiever who just can't wait for school to start? Well, incoming freshmen can participant in online courses the summer before their first semester. Instate students annual tuition and fees are about $7,000. And for outofstaters close to 17,000. For all those choosing to take advantage of Frostburg's room and board option it will cost about an additional $7,000. Selected counties in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Virginia are eligible for a lower tuition cost of $13,000. So be sure to look at FSU's web site at Frostburg.edu. FSU has more than 40 academic majors in the performance and visual arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, business and physical and teacher education. Just a few of students' favorites are business administration, psychology and early childhood education. I was in my first production last semester and fall semester was a“Anton in Show Business” and I was assistant stage manager for Raisin In The Sun. Teaching me to be more prompt about things and I'm defining a leader in myself which I never thought I could like see myself as a leader but Frostburg has definitely helped me with that. Frostburg was founded as a teacher's college and remained strong in the field of education. But FSU likes to keep their classes on a light note with courses like Professor George Plitnik’s introductory science class titled The Science of Harry Potter. Or geography Professor Dave Arnold's course where students tour tornado Alley U.S.A. A four week program researching the character and behavior of severe thunderstorms and tornados and how they effect local communities and environments. Seventy percent of faculty members at Frostburg are fulltime. And 85 percent of them hold their Ph.D. or terminal degree. So how about that test coming up? Professors are always available. They are even giving out their Emails and phone numbers to students who are just looking at coming to school here. Every professor has office hours all the time, you know, so that students can come and see them. And I've had professors help me from everything to getting a scholarship to getting a job. A professor even got me a date once. The Frostburg Bobcats offer 21 division three intercollegiate team sports in both regional and national conferences. Even though it's not required approximately 90 percent of freshmen live in a residence hall. They can choose between traditional dorms that include free washers and dryers and free and legal inroom downloading of music and movies. Plus you'll find special housing options like hall stars for community service all female or upper class adventure and a special resume writing and career planning hall. Frostburg offers more than 90 clubs and organizations including the Black Student Alliance, fraternities and sororities, intramural sports and much more. Go green and save your plant. SFU offers a slew of top notch academic programs in the environmental sciences. As well as its very own wind fuller energy system. Thank you. And the university regularly hosts blackout days Lights out. And the Emmy goes to Greg Garcia who happens to be a Frostburg Bobcat and creator and executive producer of the NBC sitcom, My Name is Earl. As you can see you're in for a warm welcome when you get to FSU. I'm Shana Gene. See you guys soon. [music] |
