Welcome to Florida International University, home of the Golden Panthers. FIU started breaking records the day it opened its doors with the largest opening day enrollment in U.S. Collegiate history. FIU is located in tropical Miami, Florida. An electrifying historic city and international gateway placing students in the epicenter of cultural activities. With direct access to world famous beaches and nightlife, that draws millions of tourists to the area every year.
I actually fell in love with Miami more being at FIU, because I realized that you take a lot of things for granted when you grow up in a city. And being here and talking to students that are not from here have shown me just what an awesome city this is. Not only because of the weather but just the culture, the people, the, the mix of Spanish and English. FIU's main campus is set on 344 acres of a plush tropical habitat with all the visual appeal unique to its location. Making it easy to forget you're anywhere near a bustling city. I'm crossing the bridge over Turtle Pond. Very appropriately named because of all the turtles that live here. Not to mention all the other wild life indigenous to South Florida. Rumor has it, if you have your first kiss on this bridge, you'll be with that person forever. Total enrollment at FIU is just over 38,000 students, made up of about 30,000 undergrads, placing it among the nation's 25 largest public universities. The average SAT score of an incoming freshman is 1131. And the average ACT score is just about 24. There are over 80 sculptures here on FIU's campus, making it the world's largest university collection of outdoor sculptures. Undergraduate tuition for Florida residents averages about 2500 dollars per year, based upon 12 credits per semester. The equivalent for non-Florida residents is about 12,500 dollars. FIU prepares students to succeed in the rapidly growing global marketplace, properly positioned in a world hub with a diverse student body and faculty alone that represents 80 countries. The most important thing that makes FIU unique is the diversity. The diversity of both the, both the student body and the faculty and the administration and the staff. The diversity that we have on campus is unbelievable. One day I was just walking from one building to another and heard four different languages in that short walk. And I got back to my office, I said what a great place to work. FIU offers nationally run programs with more than 200 bachelors, masters, and doctoral programs in 21 colleges in the school. Popular areas of study include business administration, international business, accounting, biomedical engineering, health sciences, nursing, poly-sci, international relations, and psychology. FIU's school of hospitality and tourism management helps present the annual South Beach Wine and Food Festival, one of the largest culinary events in the nation. The average class size is 28 and the student to faculty ratio is a mere 24 to one. The faculty really do care about students, and I think that we have one of the best undergraduate programs around. I think the accounting program is probably, it's actually one of the largest programs that FIU offers. And it is nationally recognized. The actual content of the, of the classes is really rigorous. And big firms like international accounting firms really appreciate that. And I'm actually doing an internship this summer at Deloitte & Touche. And they recruit heavily from FIU because they value the program. You want the truth? Your honor it would be negligent of me as a reasonably prudent person not to tell you that FIU has its own courtrooms where future litigators will exercise their right to learn. I rest my case. Nearly 80 percent of the faculty hold doctorates or the highest degree obtainable in their field. At FIU undergraduate students participate in research that is only open to graduate students at other universities. The classes I did choose were challenging. But I mean life itself is challenging. But I think FIU has made it easier to conquer that challenge. This is the FIU peace monument, dedicated by the Dali Lama. His message was it is important to educate, not only the mind, but the good hearts as well. [ Music ] The residence halls we visited were pretty sweet, or should I say pretty sweet. With two bedrooms, sharing a common bath and kitchenette. FIU has 17 sports programs, including Division 1A football and Golden Panthers have even played in the Super Bowl and World Series. There are over 100 student clubs and organizations and an active Greek Life with some fraternity and sorority houses right on campus. This is Marty's Cube, and legend has it, if you spin the cube you'll get an A on your midterm or final. [ Silence ] I think I'm going to get an A. FIU is the youngest university ever awarded a chapter of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. U.S. News and World Reports ranked FIU's undergraduate international business program seventh in the nation. FIU ranks among the 100 best values in public colleges according to Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine. I'm standing in front of the breezeway cafe, one of the many eateries here on FIU's campus. And let me tell you something, these cookies are amazing. The university expects to admit its first medical school class in the fall of 2009. If you are looking for that traditional campus feel, with a tropical flavor, in the heart of a youth-inspired sizzling, multi-cultured metropolis, then FIU should definitely be on your list. Thanks for joining us on our tour of Florida International University. See you soon. [ Music ] [ Silence ] There are over 80 sculptures here on FIU's campus, making it the world's largest university outdoor collection of sculptures. I'm sorry.
