Hey guys, what's up, thanks for tuning into University TV. I'm Lavon and were in Bean Town. That's right Boston, Massachusetts and you are invited to this exclusive tour of Emerson College. As you can see behind me, you're in the heart of the city so let's go.
Emerson College is located in the epicenter of Boston, Massachusetts near the Boston common, which was once a combat zone. Now, Boston is certainly a city we like to call it the town that thinks it's a city you can walk to one end to the other in an afternoon, but we've got all the amenities you would from a world-class city. We're right in the middle of the subway system. We're right on Boston's common so there's never a shortage of things to do. You know, when I first got here, I realized just how culturally advanced Boston really is. You have the North End, which is our Little Italy there's a lot you know great restaurants and bakeries down there. We also have the Back Bay Area, which is really kind of a newer area. We also have places like Cambridge, which are right outside of Boston that has a great music scene. We're right next to China Town too, which is actually one of the biggest China Towns in the entire country. Emerson's campus buildings border the Boston Common and the Theater District and house state of the art professional facilities. About eight buildings all within a two block radius we're a very vertical campus. If you don't like elevators you shouldn't come to Emerson College, but because we are situated right on Boston Common we actually manage to have a little bit of that campus feel even though we are in the middle of a major city. How many lamp bulbs do you think it takes to light this place up? Still don't know the answer? Well your time is up, it's more than four thousand five hundred. The Cutler Majestic Theater was built in 1903 and was one of the first in Boston to be wired for electricity. It has also housed the opera and is a member of the National League of Historic Theatres. Emerson has a total of 3100 undergrads. 60% are women, 40% men and 4% international and 15% are minorities. The student to faculty ration is 14 to 1. Here on campus, I think with Emerson being a communication school it's very important for us to put out a student population that is diverse because they're going out into a diverse workforce, a diverse work world period. And it's good that they are going to get some of that experience with their fellow classmates in class. Students apply to Emerson College very rarely undecided usually they are looking for a specific program. So conversely, we are looking for students that have had some experience doing the kind of things they are applying to do. We have no minimums for any of the admissions statistics. We are very happy to be able to read for match or for anything else. You know we have a mean GPA last year of 3. 6 and the middle 50% of our SAT's ran between about 1710 to 1970 for all three sections. You know tuition cost for all students is about $27,000. A standard double room costs close to $11,500 bringing its total cost to about $39,000 a year. There's some financial aid available, it just depends on what your need is. There's also scholarships and as part of our Honors Program, you can come here and get a merit scholarship as well. Emerson is a comprehensive college dedicated exclusively to communications and the arts in the liberal arts context, with over 37 degrees and 23 major programs. We don't have a lot of majors, but we have pretty focused majors and the kids that are do them are really passionate about what they do. A few favorites among students are; film, journalism, and visual and media arts. [ Sound effect ] One of the things that we pride ourselves in is providing the students with the industry standard software. So when they go to an internship and they turn on the computer and they open up this software it's exactly what they've been using here. Their [inaudible] are a member of the NCAA division 3 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference and a charter member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. We have a pretty competitive Wiffle ball league. They do a draft at the beginning of the year it's kind of a big deal and we just started Quiddich[assumed spelling] last spring. So that's a very exciting new thing for Emerson. [ Sound effect ] Oddly enough the residents hall at Emerson is called the little building it sits in the center of campus and houses about 750 students, has a cafeteria and a fitness room. That doesn't sound too little to me. Plus there's Piano Row just a short walk away from Little Building, which houses about 560 students and a NCAA regulation size basketball court. The campus is a lot of fun you're kind of thrown in with a bunch of wacky people. I had a bunch of people on my floor who were just totally out there, but a lot of them are still my best friend's today really creative people. I mean people that I had no idea how experienced they were, or how talented they were, and as soon as we got into the classroom or in any film screening I realized [inaudible] have talent got to be better you know. Emerson college has over 60 student groups solely dedicated to the arts and performance, publication, and artistic groups. Emerson College produces the Evvies [assumed spelling] it's the largest student [inaudible] live production in the country. It [inaudible] out loud with the color Majestic Theater then edited in here for the Emerson [inaudible]. All right guys let's take camera two. [ sound effect ] There are so many famous alumni from Emerson I don't even know where to start. But we have comedian Jay Leno, we have the creator of Will and Grace Max Mutchnic [assumed spelling]. Oh yeah don't forget actor and director Henry Winkler. You know from Happy Days, The Fahns [assumed spelling]. Hey. Your career at Emerson starts the day you show up it doesn't start when you graduate. You want to be exploited on campus. Exploited as a negative connotation, but on this campus you want people to know your name, your skills that you have, and can call you in a pinch if they need you, or have you on set all the time, because they know what you can do and you will help them be successful. And they will remember that when they get out in Hollywood, if they do get in they will try and bring you with them, and that's payback. Happens all the time. Want to get your message across? On paper, canvas, or screen? Then learn and learn with the best at Emerson College. The perk about going to Emerson, you don't need a car. Students can take a train throughout the entire city. Sounds good to me. Now I'm heading out I'm Lavon Hardy I'll catch you next time. [ music ] [ singing ] YOUniversityTV maintains all editorial control on videos produced by YOUniversityTV.
