Hey guys Shayna here for Youniversity TV. I'm on the campus of Elon[assumed spelling] University, which is a regular on the Princeton Review's top ten list of beautiful campuses. Let's take a tour. Elon is located in North Carolina's Piedmont Region, 30 minutes north of Greensboro, and northwest Raleigh [inaudible].
We're right between the mountains and the coast. So students can easily do road trips on weekends. Location wise it's just a deal. Were, were outside most of the year with athletics, and just being outside. So it's really nice. The 575 historic campus is an officially dedicated botanical garden. Need to clear your head for a day? You're only a 2-hour drive away from the mountains and 3 hours away from the beach. [Inaudible] there's always activities going on. Just the other week, Friday I think there were about 8 different activities going. From a Greek step show to a male aca pella, to a mid summer nights dream the play was here, to a live concert in front of our athletic gym. Elon university enrolls almost 5,500 students each year. Nearly 5,000 are undergraduates. Students come from 43 states, the District of Columbia, and 51 other countries. 41% are men, 59% are women. We'll choose the student who has a strong B to A average. We do count all 3 portions of the SAT and so a quick average would be about 600 on each part. Tuition is just over $21,000 and room and board is about $8,000. So your total cost would run between 31 and $32,000 a year. You can get a scholarship and financial aid, and if you're from North Carolina, you're up for a state grant. Elon offers 51 undergraduate majors, 5 graduate programs, and 6 [inaudible] programs for students who want to take their education to the next level. The most popular undergraduate programs are business, communication, biology, education, and political science. Students who choose to stay on campus during the winter term can expect to take a lot of exciting courses, like math origami, the business of NASCAR, philosophy of political humor, and literature of terror and the supernatural. But the university also offers students a chance to study abroad in this time, and 73% of seniors have at least one international study experience under their belts by the time they graduate. At Elon we have programs designed to get freshman active in courses that they may not normally be able to access at other institutions. So we have a program called Fresh TV where freshman doing television and so about 50 freshmen every year come in, and we start them on an accelerated program. They can work at the newspaper, they can take our classes. 85% of 310 full time professors at Elon hold a PhD. More than 33 members of faculty have international scholarly interest and 8 have been [inaudible] recipients. The average class size is 22 with a student to faculty ratio of 14:1. Sports are big at Elon, whether it's cheering on their southern conference teams, participating in club or intramural sports, or taking a skiing trip with Elon outdoors. Athletics are really starting to boom here. The football team is really growing. The basketball team made the [inaudible] championship. The, both teams actually men and women's tennis. Baseball is doing amazing right now. So you're starting to see this atmosphere of growing respect [inaudible] for athletics, and also school spirit. People who go to Elon love Elon, they love the community, they love the school. 58% of students live on Campus. Elon is home to 13 traditional residence halls and on campus flats and apartments, 18 leaning communities, several pavilions for honors students and the Loid[assumed spelling] center for Greek housing. I've lived in [inaudible] for the last two years. It's not too far away from campus but it gives me a little freedom. My three best friends I was paired up with last year, and we're living together again this year, and then next year we're actually living in a house together. So Elon does a really good job. Every Tuesday morning class is out. The teachers, faculty, and staff get together in the heart of campus for campus coffee, which is 40 minutes of free food, free drinks, and lots to talk about. Evon counts more than 150 clubs and organizations. 1 out of 4 students joins Greek life with 22 Greek fraternities and sorority chapters. Want to stay in shape? Spinning, Pilates, and yoga are a couple of the classes offered at Evon's state of the art fitness center. Plus there's an on campus driving range that's open 7 days a week. Here in this simulated stock trading room of Reed Finance Center students can develop and test their business model, and get feedback on their ideas as well. The information you see on the plasma screen is real time data from the global market, and mentors are there to give you heads up or [inaudible]. Before you ever set foot in the classroom, you can be a step ahead and get to know other incoming students faculty, and staff by taking part of one of Elon's first year summer programs. Improve your team building skills while rock climbing, rappelling, and rafting in West Virginia. Learn about leadership and the environment as you hike the Appalachian trail. Work with habitat for humanity or travel to Atlanta to learn about religious diversity.
