What's up? I am Ferrari St. Paul and this is Youniversity TV where we put you in university. Welcome to Davidson, North Carolina a small college town set against a major city. Let's take a tour of Davidson College. Davidson College is set alongside beautiful lake Nor ma n, twenty minutes north of Charlotte in North Carolina, an hour and a half drive from the Blue Ridge parkway and the Appalachian Mountains.
The good thing about Davidson, it's a small town but it is situated in between a lot of different metropolitan areas. So if you wanted the small town feeling then you could have that for about ten to fifteen miles around the school, but if you want that city feeling, which I like to have sometimes, you can definitely go away and get that. Davidson's red brick buildings and stately columns are surrounded by century old oak trees. The four hundred and fifty acre classic college campus blends small town and city living with metro Charlotte just a short ride away. Of the seventeen hundred students on campus, sixty percent are from outside the southeastern U.S. and more than twenty percent are students of color. Both genders are equally represented with fifty percent women and fifty percent men. The students here are inspiring. They are fun to be around. They work hard, they play ha rd, they challenge me; they are fabulous. Half of Davidson's admitted students scored between nineteen fifty and twenty two forty on their SAT and between thirty and thirty-four on their ACT, but these aren't requirements for admission. Davidson takes on a holistic individual review for each application and typically admits twenty five to twenty eight percent of its applicants. Davidson is unique in the sense that we require peer recommendation, so we require our students to walk over to one of their friends and say will you fill out this evaluation form for me. Tuition for first year students is around thirty four thousand dollars plus fees and between nine and twelve thousand dollars for a double room and board for a total cost of under thirty six thousand dollars for the year. Expenses like books, orientation fees, and travel are included in that figure. Imagine, never having to do a load of laundry for four years. The college laundry has been in operation for decades. Students can drop off their clothes to be washed, dried, folded, and put on hangers. If you are dreaming of the great college experience at Davidson and think that you can't afford it, take note of the Davidson trust. If you qualify, the trust insures that your financial needs are met through a combination of grants, and student employment. We have taken out that loan component. So we meet it one hundred percent grant and student having a job on campus and we are the first liberal arts college in this country to have done so. Davidson is widely regarded as one of the best educational institutions in the nation. The college offers twenty-one different majors, twelve minors, twelve concentrations and numerous other courses of study including Arabic and computer science. The most popular majors are: English, biology, political science, history, psychology, and economics. I think that it's a remarkable thing that we live in a culture that says to people hey why you don't take four years and explore your potential and we are going to support you in figuring out what you really want to do. And that is definitely something that happens here. Students are allowed to design their own major through the center for interdisciplinary study. And nearly eighty percent of students study abroad during their tenure here. As a sophomore, you can choose to design your own field of study. Mine basically combines political theory with anthropological methods looking at China. Of the one hundred sixty two full time facility members, ninety-eight percent have a terminal degree; the average class size is just fifteen with the student to facility ratio of ten to one. I think that the facility is just unbelievable and really is so invested in working with students here and teaching. Davidson competes in twenty-one NCAA division one sports many as a member of the southern conference. He is the cool cat on the court; he is that fierce feline with the fancy footwork. Meet Mister Cat. Davidson's mascot and number one fan, he even accompanied the men's basketball team to the sweet sixteen and the elite eight. School spirit was beyond measure. More than the school spirit is the community spirit, because we are all in this together. Roughly ninety five percent of the student body lives on campus in one of the eleven residence halls or six apartments styled buildings. Freshman dorms especially are really focused on building a close community and people really do enjoy living on campus. There are plenty of fun things on campus if you are involved in club life or take part in student activities. Join one of four women's eating houses and sweat it out during club sports. Or go Greek as a member of the national Pan-Hellenic sorority or one of seven national men's fraternities. There are concerts, there are plays, there are multicultural events, and lot alums will come back and speak, movie screenings. I can't even cover all of them. If you are looking for a sweet treat off campus, the local soda shop is right down the street. And students told me that the milk shakes were a must have. Right now, I've got a chocolate peanut butter and it is heavenly. In eighteen ninety-six Davidson was home to the world's first medical use of X-rays. And in the nineteen twenty's the national physics honor society was founded here as well. Davidson professors have pioneered undergraduate curricula in the fields of neuroscience, genenomics, and synthetic biology. Don't forget the Davidson grad who makes sure that you have it your way, Don Chippy is known as the king on campus because he is the CEO of the fast food giant Burger King. So if you are looking for a small liberal arts college with an honor code, division one sports and lots of choice programs, you might just hit a home run when you check out Davidson. Well thanks for checking out Davidson College with me today. I am Ferrari St. Paul with Youniversity TV and remember, Go Wildcats!
