Hey, what's up,
YOUniversity TV watchers, I'm Nicole Erin and today we're at William Jewell College and I'm walking the quad just like students do here on their first and last day on campus, completing a full circle of their time here. Come join us on our campus tour. William Jewell College is in Liberty, Missouri, two blocks from the town square. Kansas City is so close, its beautiful skyline is visible from campus. Can you describe Missouri for people who don't know much about it and what it's like to live here? Missouri's a pretty happenin' place. We're really close to Kansas City and that has a lot of neat stuff going on. You've got the Power & Light District which is bringing a lot of culture and sport into the downtown Kansas City area. The William Jewell campus is nestled among 200 acres of lush rolling hills in western Missouri, 20 minutes north of downtown Kansas City, home of the world class Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Not only is Jewell Hall the oldest building on campus, but it's also the highest point in Clay County and it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the Civil War this building was used as a hospital for Union troops and when the soldiers passed through here they left their mark on the side of the building. Approximately 1,200 students attend William Jewell. Fifty-eight percent are female and forty-two percent male. Seventy-five percent of the classes have less than 20 students, and the student to teacher ratio is 11:1. I think we have very inquisitive students, students that are excited to talk about and grapple with real world questions so they're really excited about the new knowledge that they're learning. They're just really good kids, they're kids who want to make a difference in the world, who believe that it's important to get involved in the community, believe that it's important to make a difference. The average incoming Jewell student has a GPA of 3.7, a mid-range ACT score between 23 and 28, or over 1200 on the SAT. All students will pay $24,500 a year in tuition and fees. Typical room and board runs less than $7,000, bringing the total cost to about $31,000. Jewell has a generous financial aid program. The college offers 60 majors, preprofessional programs, and the opportunity to craft a self-designed major. Just a few of the students' favorites are Business Administration, Nursing, Music, Biology, Education, and Psychology. Jewell has one of the country's only undergraduate majors in Non-Profit Leadership. William Jewell was also the first college to allow students to turn their core curriculum into a second major by adding three experiential components. Jewell students can graduate with a double or triple major in four years. Although I am--I got my major is in Business, I also feel like I have a minor in different sciences, Theology, Philosophy, Psychology, just because of all the general education classes we've had to take. The idea of a student coming out of William Jewell and having a grasp of the idea that life is rich because of all these variety of things, that to me is a key to a great liberal arts education. There are 78 full-time faculty members at William Jewell. Fifty-one have tenure and 88 percent have the highest degree in their field. All the faculty on campus, they make it a point to you know, make sure they're involved personally with you, you know, outside the classroom, and they often encourage you, you know, come and visit them in the classrooms. You know, they have an open door policy so even if it doesn't pertain to, you know, something in class, just come in and chat with them, you know, they'd love nothing more than that. The William Jewell Cardinal teams compete in the Heart of America Conference of the NAIA Division I. William Jewell offers a living-learning experience with six on-campus residence halls. Fraternity Row includes four state of the art residences and a brand new sorority complex for the college's Greek women. Jewell is a campus with a rich history. This chapel is named after John Gano who was George Washington's chaplain for the Continental Army. The chapel houses Washington's sword and a painting depicting his baptism by John Gano. WJC offers 38 nationally affiliated and 33 campus-wide organizations from political and service organizations to the student newspaper. Well, we have great different kinds of activities from Student Senate to Greek organizations, to Amnesty International, so it's really easy for someone to get involved and also to relate those activities to their education and their liberal arts education that's here at Jewell. The Oxbridge Honors Program is the only program in America offering students a major using a British tutorial-based instruction method. The Oxbridge majors even get to spend an entire junior year at either Oxford or Cambridge Universities in England. Attention: A phony British accent is not necessary to participate in this program. No actual British accents were harmed in the making of this college video tour. Thank you. If you're enticed by the prospect of designing your own major or studying abroad, great internship and research opportunities, then what better place to start your journey than William Jewell College. Well, that's it for us. I hope you enjoyed this tour as much as I did. But don't run off too quickly because I've got one more thing for you. This beautiful view. |
