I'm Levon Harvey here for YouniversityTV at Florida A&M University, voted the number one institution for African Americans by Black Enterprise. Florida A&M's University's main campus sits snug in Tallahassee, Florida, just minutes from the capital.
Family sits in Tallahassee, so where the seat of government, and being in political science, I want to one day work in government. And so it gives me a great and rare opportunity. There's a lot of students across the state don't have to be here to go to the capital and interact with these legislators, in the, you know, the government as a whole. The main campus is 422 acres, and has 14 historic buildings that sit upon the highest of seven surrounding hills. This is the president's room. Part of the Meek Eton Archives, which features Spanish history. It's a great way to see how the university's progress from 1887 until today. Florida A&M University enrolls more than 11,500 students, 58 percent are women, and 42 percent are men. Prospective students choose AMU because of what they're going to get academically. Their views and perceptions are going to be shaped and molded because of the experiences that they have through their curriculum, through their extra-curricular activities. The general requirements for first time college students to FAMU is a 2.5 of the core GPA, an SAT average of 1,020 verbal and math, or an ACT average of a 21. The average undergraduate student that lives in Florida will pay about 5,000 dollars a semester, including room and board, while out of staters will pay about 11,000 dollars. The university offers 63 bachelor's degrees, 37 masters degrees, and several doctorates. FAMU also offers a professional degree in law, pharmaceutical sciences, and architecture. Our College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science offers a six-year PhD program. Our school of business offers a five-year MBA program. So not only are students earning their masters degree while they're here, they're required to do three years of an internship. That kind of sets them ahead of the pace for everyone else. Florida's A&M faculty is ranked second in the nation by the National Science Foundation for its research publications on global science issues. Looks like A&M is right up there with some of the larger universities. FAMU really brings out the best in you. FAMU provides everything that you need to be great at whatever you're trying to do. It has a faculty that you need to really direct your career. The teachers really take time out with the student. Most of your classes are in an intimate setting and you really get a chance to learn the materials. In addition, there are so many on campus organizations that deal with each major that you get the out of classroom experience that really gets you involved so you know what you're going in to with your career before you leave outside of FAMU. We expect our students to graduate with at least two internships. Because if they're going to be able to compete in the real world, they have to have real world experience. So we have an internship coordinator, a job placement coordinator, and so that we, as faculties, tell our students about all kinds of opportunities that are available to them. [ Screeching sounds ] The Florida A&M Rattlers have won 22 Southern Athletic Conference Championships and their strong football team has gone to an eight black college nationals. 36 of the players have become All American, and 42 even went on to play in the NFL. Our mascot is a rattler, so we strike, we strike, and we strike again in all that we do. Our chance, our basketball games, our football games, our rattlers are always striking, always. FAMU's 90 million dollar state of the art recreation facility has the best of weight training and aerobic equipment. There are dedicated spaces for cardio and other work outs. And they often have several intramural sports here. And don't forget to treat yourself to a massage or hit the juice bar. Sweet. FAMU offers two types of housing. Traditional residential, and on campus apartments. The apartments are not coed, but they are equipped with furniture, full kitchen, and bathrooms. I came living on campus as a freshman, and this year I decided not to move off. I, I like living on campus. I'm living in an apartment style where I have roommates. We have a kitchen. We have a living room. We have furniture. It's pretty neat. I truly enjoy the dorms here. For me it was really good to meet such good people in the dorms, because I'm far from home. I didn't have a lot of friends. I don't have any family in the state of Florida. So they became kind of like my second family. Do you want to get with the social club, or do you prefer a cultural or academically geared organization? A&M has got a lot of activities going on. Our school has over 160 clubs and organizations from dance and modeling troops, to Greek Letter fraternities, and sororities, religious clubs, clubs that deal within your major. I mean there's pretty much anything that you want to do you'll be able to do it. I am involved in several activities on campus, as you'll find with many FAMU students, we are very active here on campus. FAMU's Marching Band 100 has been credited for developing more than 30 ground breaking techniques that have set new standards and operating procedures for high school and collegiate marching band programs. Our Marching 100 does tour nationally. Currently we have 10 drum majors, so we are definitely a band that's on the move and growing by leaps and bounds. [ Music ] The [inaudible] celebrates FAMU's achievement by being named the number one university in the nation by the Princeton Review and the 97, 98 academic year. In the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, we have produced 25 percent of the nation's African American pharmacists. So when you look at the productivity of this one college here, at Florida University, we've made tremendous impacts on the health manpower of the entire country. [ Background talking and music ] So, if you're looking for a historically impressive university with excellent academics, march on over here for a campus tour. I'm Levon Harvey, thanks for joining me today in Tallahassee, Florida. See you next time. [ Music ] |
