What's up Youniversity TV, I'm Shanna Dean and welcome to Georgia Tech. Now the buzz around campus are these Yellow Jackets, let's see how many we can round up today. Georgia Institute of Technology is located in the heart of vibrant Mid Town Atlanta, the cultural center of the state's capital city. We have Coca Cola to the left, the Aquarium to the right; what's a girl to do first?
The Georgia Institute of Technology is located on four hundred beautiful acres of park like atmosphere. There are twelve thousand nine hundred and seventy space undergrads at Georgia Tech from all fifty states and over one hundred and fifteen countries. Sixty eight percent of students are from Georgia, thirty-two percent are from out of state, thirty five percent are minorities and roughly thirty percent are women. The undergraduate to faculty ratio is fourteen to one. Our students are very motivated here, I think we have very bright students that are very, very hard working, it's a difficult place but you know our students respond to it they are great in class. I love teaching them. The best word I would use to describe tech students is intense, people are intense about a lot of things, they're intense about academics, and they're intense about supporting athletic programs, the extracurricular activities. I think that's something at Tech that we really, really strive for is balance, so to fit everything in, students here are really intense. Students looking to attend Georgia Tech typically have a three point five or higher high school GPA and above a twelve hundred on the SAT's. The annual cost for the school year for instate tuition is about 16,500 dollars and 35,500 for out of staters. Cost includes tuition fees, housing, full meal plan, and estimated personal expenses. Georgia Tech has thirty-five undergraduate degrees, forty-nine masters, and twenty-eight doctoral programs. The largest and oldest major at Georgia Tech is mechanical engineering, while biomedical engineering is the most popular major among freshmen. [ Steam Whistle ] You know you're at a top-notch engineering school when the sound of a steam whistle signals you to get to class. This whistle blows five minutes before the hour; so what are you still doing here? Go. Georgia Tech has seven hundred and forty six fulltime undergraduate professors with over ninety-five percent of the faculty holding doctoral or terminal degrees in their fields. What's really special about this place is that there's a lot of collaboration between the different professors or our doors are opened we have a lot of projects that we want to work on together so I really like that sort of collaborative atmosphere. Everyone's very encouraging of other faculty. The professors at Tech are really, really intelligent; they focus a lot on research which is great which makes our institute very research oriented. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets compete at the NCAA division one level with eight men's varsity teams and seven women's Tech athletics. [ Horn ] Here comes one of their fearless leaders now; it's the Rambling Wreck with driver Brandon. Brandon you have to tell us a little bit about this rambling wreck. Well, the rambling wreck is a 1934 Model A Sports Coupe it's been at Georgia Tech since 1961 and it is the official school mascot and it leads the team on the field for every home game. That's awesome. [ Music ] We're well over fifty thousand people coming to our football games and the Yellow Jacket Football is really a lot of fun ACC you get Florida State coming in and Miami coming in, North Carolina, Clemson. Big draws for a lot of students and game day you can't just can't duplicate that; the energy, the spirit, the excitement. When this place fills up and you get the Rambling Wreck driving on to the field and Buzz running around and the guys coming out on the field, it's a lot of fun. While it's not a requirement, close to ninety five percent of freshman choose to live in one of the twenty-eight residences on campus; the other five percent I don't know what they are thinking. I loved living in the dorms my freshman year, I had a great floor to live on. I lived in a coed dorm it was an all girls floor. Then we have the freshman experience program so it really became a community I really got to know everybody on my hall. I had an upperclassman there to help me with anything that I needed from classes; just advice. They plan activities for you. Georgia Tech has an active campus and a wide variety of programming with over three hundred fifty clubs and organizations. I'm in the National Society of Black Engineers so with that we do a lot of community service. I am also in a fraternity here on campus, Omega Si Phi, so we do a lot of community service at parties and things like that. Intramural that's something else that I like, that's over at the campus recreation center we play basketball, football and things like that. There's even a rec center with a water slide and a lazy river for students to enjoy. Some famous faces got their start at Georgia Tech including our thirty ninth U.S. President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jimmy Carter. This library-museum in Atlanta is actually named after him. So, if you're serious about hitting the books and conducting cutting edge research consider Georgia Institute of Technology. So many buzzes so little time. I think this is buzz number ten maybe but that's all the time Youniversity TV has so we're going to wrap up so make sure you check out Georgia Tech yourself and then you'll see what all the buzz is about I'm Shanna, see you later.
