Hey, what's up? I'm Nicole Erin and welcome to the Cuse, home of Syracuse University, where real women and men wear orange. Let's roll. Syracuse University is located on a hill overlooking Syracuse, New York, about 250 miles from New York City. Syracuse is also close to the Finger Lakes in the Adirondack Mountains.
City of Syracuse is actually known as being the city of festival, which essentially for students means a lot of free food and a lot of entertainment. Syracuse features 170 collegiate buildings that are a mix of eclectic 19th century Romanesque architecture and state of the art contemporary structures. The campus spans 200 acres, and right in the center, you'll find students hanging out in the quad. SU has around 11,800 fulltime undergraduate students. The students are diverse. They come from more than 100 countries from all 50 states. Around 4 percent of the student body is international, 44 percent are male, and 56 percent are female. There is no minimum score requirement at Syracuse. SU is interested in special qualities students will bring to campus. The average GPA of admitted students is at 3.7. The middle 50 percent of the critical reading and math sections of the SAT is 1130 to 1310, and the average ACT composite is at 27. For some of the undergraduate colleges at SU, these averages are much higher. SU is a private university, so instate and out-of-state tuition is the same. On average, a student will pay a yearly tuition of 32,000 dollars and housing and meals will cost an additional 12,000 dollars. Syracuse University offers more than 200 majors, which are split up among the 9 undergraduate colleges at the university. Students can select from a list of dual and combined major options, choose from more than 90 minors, or in some cases, develop an individualized major. Arts and sciences, sports management, information studies, aerospace engineering, and inclusive and elementary special education are most popular among students. I've sent groups of students out on election night and having them in the middle of a lot of those live venues and reporting back to the newsroom about what's going on in that scene on election night is really a lot fun. They're incredibly excited. They're standing right next to all the professional journalists. The liberal arts are really our core. All of our students are involved in our College of Arts and Sciences and are taking liberal arts classes. And the visual and performing arts is another big one. We were the first college in the country to offer a bachelor of fine arts degree and the first to offer a 4-year program, a 4-year degree in music. The SI Newhouse School of Public Communications is a top rating journalism school. You might recognize some of these famous faces, like Steve Croft, the CBS correspondent and sports broadcaster Bob Costas. And in the Newhouse school, we have major media partners all over the United States where we can basically say, here's a student, I'm really excited about him, he's got a lot of things going on, he's a great writer, you're gonna want this guy in your newsroom. The university has 897 fulltime faculty members. Nearly 90 percent have the highest degree in their fields, and the average class size is 24. I think the faculty are the greatest part of Syracuse. They're the reason I came back to work here in the admissions office. I really believe in this place and the relationships that I was able to build with faculty. I got so much advice in the job search from the faculty, but I also was invited over to their houses for dinner, and really got to know them outside of class as well. The Syracuse Orange participates in the NCAA Division I in the Big East Conference. SU is one of just two Division I A schools that then claimed national championships in football, men's basketball, and men's lacrosse. Six SU teams have won a total of 26 national championships. The Carrier Dome, where all home football and lacrosse games are played, is the largest dome on any college campus. The roof of the dome is inflatable with several air compressors that work around the clock to maintain its structure. The carrier was the first dome stadium in the northeast United States and has a seating capacity of 50,000. Students come to the carrier dome to make some noise. Besides cheering inside the dome, fans like to have fun outside the dome pillars. Let's go dome [inaudible]. Students are required to live in university housing for their first 2 years. There are 20 residence halls including learning communities where students enroll in the same academic courses all sorted together. Students at SU work hard but play hard too. There's over 300 clubs and organizations, so there's never a lack of things to join. If you're looking for a taste of Syracuse, Marshall Street, a.k.a. M Street, is where it's at. There's Greek food, Chinese food, and American cuisine. And the best part about it, there's always a place to grab a late night slice of pizza. And if you wanna dine downtown, Orange men and women both agree that Dinosaur is the best barbecue place in town. From the ribs to chicken, you can't beat the food and the fun atmosphere filled with SU spirit. SU is a national leader in study abroad programs with 40 percent of students choosing to go overseas during their time at Syracuse. So if you're looking for a university with a great location, school spirit, abundant at interdisciplinary study options, well, Syracuse University may be just for you. You can't visit the Cuse unless you met the Orange. What up, Otto? Now that I met the main squeeze on campus, our tour is complete. Otto and I are gonna roll out. [ Music ] |
