Hello everyone, we're coming at you from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

It's home of the Cyclones and the largest public artwork collection in the nation.

Let's get started and blow through this campus tour. Come on.

[ Music ] Iowa State is located in Ames, Iowa, just 30 minutes from the state capital Des Moines.

There's so much to do around town. I'm a big fan of local music so I like to go to the M Shop, which is one of the oldest running music venues in the state. And that's in the Memorial Union, and they bring in just wonderful bands and it's so much fun.

Iowa State's campus contains over 160 buildings, several that are listed on the National Register of Historic places. Central campus includes 490 acres of trees and plants. The landscape's most dominant feature is the 20-acre central lawn, reserved as a beautiful space for students to study, relax, and socialize. Lancelot and Elaine are swans that were donated to the school back in 1931. Since then, they've made their home right here at Lake La Verne.

The lake is also a very popular spot for students to come to sit back, relax, and even study. Iowa State has a total enrollment of about 27,000, with the student to faculty ratio of 15 to one. And an average class size of 33. The study body's made up of 57 percent men and 17 minority and international students.

The average freshman entering Iowa State university has approximately a 3.4, 3.5 grade point average coming in from high school. On the average, students are in, oh about the top 25 percent of their high school class.

Freshman applicants who achieve an RAI score that leaves 245 and to meet Iowa State minimum high course requirements are automatically offered admission. You can find the RAI equation on Iowa State's website and calculate your score.

Iowa residents can expect to pay around 6,400 dollars a year for tuition, non-residents pay closer to 17,500. And those who live on campus and decide on the meal plan will pay about 7,000 extra.

Iowa State University has the resources for almost any kind of major that students are interested in. We have 100 different degree programs here, six colleges, the College of Agriculture and Life Science, the College of Business, the College of Design, the College of Engineering, the College of Human Sciences, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which actually our largest college.

I feel like classes at Iowa State are a lot more a, interactive and b, intellectual, which I really like. The professors treat you like you're an adult and they treat you like you can really learn this information and you're really capable of doing it.

We've developed learning communities that hope to make the larger university small for students when they come here. They can connect with other students who are in their majors. They connect with students who have similar interests. They take classes in common. They have a peer mentor, an upper class student who works with them. They are tied with some faculty members.

Iowa State's biological sciences, physics, chemistry, statistics, interior design, architecture, and landscape architecture programs are ranked among the best in the nation.

[ Buzzing sounds ]

Iowa State is a leader in the world of virtual reality research. In fact, its home to the highest resolution six sided [inaudible] in the world, called the C6.

Students get to experience these virtual environments ranging from plant cells to outer space, all within this 100 million-pixel cave.

Iowa State has over 1,600 faculty, 93 percent hold a doctorate or the highest degree in their field.

I've been at four universities and I'll be very honest to say, Iowa State works the best. Everyone is hard working, has really good, strong values. And is, is always ready to do that extra step to make sure the job gets done.

The Iowa State Cyclones play in the NCAA's Division 1A as part of the big 12 conference.

In 1895, when the football defeated a rival contender, Iowa State suffered an unusually high number of devastating Cyclones. After the game, newspaper headlines read struck by Cyclone. It comes from Iowa, and devastates Evanston town.

The author was playing off the weather, but the name stuck and Iowa State was from then on known as the Cyclones.

So hold on, if Iowa State's nickname is the Cyclones, then why is the school mascot a Cardinal?

Well, the Cardinal was chosen in reference to the school color, Cardinal red. Duh.

Iowa State has 19 on-campus residence halls, and three apartment complexes for upper classmen, that are divided into geographical areas. Plus over 2,300 students live in the fraternity and sorority chapter houses available.

Students can do a lot of things. I think we have over 700 clubs and organizations, so students are finding themselves doing one of those. Whether it be a member of one or starting one, you can join the Greek Community, you can volunteer a lot off of campus. You can do intramurals, I was in flag football, basketball, they have dodge ball tournaments. Even Texas Hold'em tournament as well. And I mean aside from intramural students get involve with their student government. They can get involved on their residence hall floors. Lots of opportunities even your first semester as a freshman you get involved.

Watch your step when you walk into Memorial Union, legend has it that any student who walks across the Zodiac will fail their next exam. Oh no. But just 50 yards away, you can reverse the curse by throwing a coin into the fountain of the four seasons.

George Washington Carver, world-renowned musician, athletic trainer, student leader and plant scientist, was the first African American to attend Iowa State. He also came up with 325 different ways to use a peanut.

So, if you want to be versatile like Carver and wipe out the competition like the Cyclones, tear yourself away and head for Iowa State today.

We're ending our tour at the beautiful [inaudible].

You know they say you aren't a true Iowa Stater until you've been kissed under the [inaudible] at midnight.

Well we'll leave that campus legend to you future Cyclones to experience. For now, we're out of here. For YouniversityTV, I'm Levon.

And I'm Jessica, we'll catch you next time.
