What's up guys? I'm Ferrari [assumed spelling] St. Paul with YouniversityTV, walking the central quad at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. It has been said that walking Bowdoin's campus is like taking a walk through the history of American architecture.
[ Music ] Bowdoin College is located on the coast of Maine, just 25 miles from downtown Portland, where you can found countless shops and restaurants right on the water, and it's so easy to get here. Save gas and jump on the Bowdoin Student Shuttle. This is a, you know, a beautiful state. You know, it's a, within a half an hour of here, you can be at the beach; you can be in Portland, which is a neat little city; you can be out in rural Maine, so, you know, there's a lot of different choices just getting around here. A lot of students, for example, live about 20 minutes down the road in Harpswell on one of the fingers that go out into the, the Casco Bay. So, you know, for exploring the Maine coastline and just going up to Katahdin, about four hours from here, and hiking, there's nothing that can beat this place. [ Music ] Bowdoin has over 1,700 undergraduates, split evenly between men and women. Nearly 30% of students are of color, and 3% are international. Sixty-nine percent of Bowdoin's classes have fewer than 20 students, and the student to faculty ratio is 9 to 1. The average SAT scores around 1400. We don't have an average GPA simply because there's so many schools with different grading scales; some don't give grades at all. Typically, we say most students are in the top 10% of their class, and even a large majority in the top 5% of their class, which doesn't assure admission in any way. We look for qualities like academic and intellectual passion. We look for serious involvement in their home community, whether that is sports or clubs or community service, and we look for students who can provide something exciting to this community. [ Music ] Bowdoin costs about $49,000 per year, including tuition, room and board, and fees. Yet many students pay much less, since Bowdoin offers student financial aid, with the average grant roughly running $34,000. [ Music ] Bowdoin offers 42 majors, plus self-design major options. A few student favorites are Government and Legal Studies, Economics, History, English and Biology. Bowdoin is home to a world-renowned museum of art. Inside there are famous pieces like Winslow Homer's Fountains at Night. It's probably what these big, scary lions are guarding. [ Music ] Bowdoin's faculty includes many worldwide respected artists and scholars. Students work closely with faculty on research projects, and faculty members strongly encourage and assist student-generated research. [ Music ] The Bowdoin Polar Bears compete in the NCAA Division 3 level in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, with men's ice hockey as the most popular spectator sport. But if you'd rather watch water sports, Bowdoin has a competitive sailing team. Sailing World Magazine rates them among the top 20 in the nation. [ Music ] And the best part is, no matter which residence hall you choose to live in, you're close to one of Bowdoin's top ranked dining halls. It's very important. [ Music ] Oh, yeah. This is my favorite part of every day; the food part. This is some award winning food. Princeton Review has actually ranked it number 1. Let's see what we got. [ Music ] Our, our dining is pretty much top notch, which I can say and not feel bashful about because it really is. And the dining service does a great job about being there for the students, and they'll put together like a Thanksgiving meal or a Christmas meal, and it just, it, it's like that little extra touch, which I think defines Bowdoin. You walk into the dining hall, things are decorated. They have a home cooked food night, where students send in recipes, and you'll see like this is my mom's chicken and this is my mom's curry, you know, or my dad's omelet recipe, and it's just the little things that make the difference. With 29 housing buildings, there are plenty of options to choose from. From co-ed dorms to apartments to small college houses. [ Music ] Between grabbing a bite to eat and going to class, Bowdoin students keep really busy with plenty of activities. There are hundreds of clubs and organizations to join. Right now, I'm rowing on the New Meadows River where the Crew Club Team practices. [ Music ] We have like a really amazing outing club, and I think it was the second week of school, like I was already out on the rivers like with them, running the rivers like in kayaks and white water rafting. Later in the semester, I also got involved with Leadership Training, it's called. Like say that the first week of school I want to take my, my floor out, out to Mount Katahdin for instance and hike up the mountain, and I'm totally capable of doing that, and they provide like the rides and everything you need for it. So it's very accessible, it's very easy. And if you're a film fan, what better way to spend your free time than with a movie night? And what better way to get your movie than in your mailbox? That's right. The founder and CEO of Netflicks is a Bowdoin alum, so you have Reed Hastings to thank for this fun and easy DVD mailing system. Yes! Loved it! After a busy day on campus, it's time for some fun in downtown Brunswick. Whether it's shopping, coffee, or ice cream you crave, you can find it on Main Street. I'm going to go see if I can find some lobster. I'm Ferrari St. Paul, and I'll see you later. [ Music ] YOUniversityTV maintains all editorial control on videos produced by YOUniversityTV.
