Are recent crackdowns on student journalists fair?

From College News - Two incidents involving student journalists raise the question.

Tim Chapman and Katie Hibson, two James Madison University journalism students, were arrested for trespassing on university grounds, according to the Cavalier Daily. Supposedly, the two students violated University rules by interviewing students inside the dormitory after visitors were restricted.

The students were investigating an incident on campus were a peeping tom was speculated. They were gathering information to report for their campus newspaper, The Breeze, when they were told to leave.

On October 27th, after the arrest was made, The Virginia Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists demanded the university to drop all charges against the two students.

Along with a recent incident where students at Northwester University were served subpoenas because of their work surrounding a death penalty case, are these student crackdowns fair?
