>> Hey, what's up guys? I'm Nicole Erin for YouniversityTV and today we're with the set designer who's going to show us how to turn this into this. Set designer Richard Crowell translates a playwright's words into reality.

>> You are the person responsible for putting the environment on the stage, whatever that environment may be.

>> The sets Richard creates are based on the information he gets from working with the directors and playwrights.

>> Sometimes, you're doing sketches, sometimes you're doing models, it really depends on the production. But you want to be clear with everyone about where you're heading, what it's going to be.

>> Once they have a final design, he then provides a guesstimate of the costs to build it, and then Richard oversees the construction.

>> I'll come in and see, see what they're building and, and make certain that it, it follows to the design and that we're on schedule, and looks like we're under budget, that kind of stuff.

>> Right. Richard starts on sets long before the production hits the stage.

>> I started the design that opened last week, and four months ago. But it's really dependent on the show. Years ago, I worked on a show for two and a half years before its opening night.

>> In order to get your designs on stage, you have to get a bachelor's degree in theatrical set design, and often times a master's degree. Richard also things internships are helpful.

>> It gives you the opportunity to learn from a working designer, see how they communicate with others, see how they create the work they create and put it on the stage.

>> There are a number of industries for a set designer to work in. Designers are found in theme parks, theaters or movie industries. Breaking into this field is going to take a lot of hard work and determination. You can expect to have to work your way up from the bottom.

>> It's pretty competitive because there's a finite number of set designs produced each year, and, and that makes it difficult to get your foot in the door.

>> The average income for a set designer will vary depending on which industry you work in and your level of notoriety.

>> Your, your Broadway scene designers are probably making in the six figures or close to it. At this level, it's, it's a very workable living wage.

>> Being a great set designer means being able to communicate your ideas effectively along with artistic ability.

>> So, there's a lot of communication that goes back and forth between the others, and knowing what they're doing and how they do, what they do is very helpful to making that whole collaborative process come together at the end.

>> Now that you've seen the set design go from page to stage, it's time for me to go. I'm Nicole Erin for YouniversityTV, see you later.
