It's the infamous Alex, one of YouniversityTV's senior editors, how are you doing, sir?

 Good, how are you?

I am good. I am here and I am ready to see what happens to our tapes when we hand them off to you.

Why don't you sit down and I can show you what we do every single day.

Want to help create the magic of the silver screen or produce video on a smaller scale, if so, editing could be the career for you.

It is my job on the daily basis to take sort of the rough outline and ideas that people have and basically a pile of raw material and to turn it into finished, cohesive stories that compel people to watch and transfer sort of the knowledge or idea that my client wants to convey, in this case, YouniveristyTv to the perspective audience.

But I found out pretty quickly the job is not as easy as it looks.

 [Inaudible] with me.

Uh oh, what did I do there?

You haven't hurt anything yet, but it is still early.

Although a Bachelor's degree is not required to become an editor, it will definitely put you ahead of the game and the learning doesn't end when you land a job as an editor. Alex says keeping up with technology is a must.

Technically, you have to understand the multitude of ways footage can be coming to you, you know it is not necessarily just going to be coming to you on a tape anymore. It could be coming to you on a file, on a disc, over the internet and because of that, it is going to be stored in various technical ways that you have to be able to deal with.

TV station and cable network editors usually work a 5 day, 40 hour week, but beware production deadlines could require longer hours at the office.

Obviously broadcast has the most pressure, because they have a very definite time that they have to hit every night. The internet is a little bit different because we do have a certain amount of work that we have to get, our goals that we have to reach every week, but it is not imperative that we get you know a piece done by say 6 o'clock every night to make the nightly news.

Most salaried editors are employed by television broadcasting stations or motion picture studios, but the number of people interested in these positions is usually much greater than the number of openings available. So get ready for some competition. You should note that employers usually look for highly creative and motivated candidates with strong computer skills. So what kind of person would be good at this?

Well, I think you have to be highly motivated. You have to have a lot of energy, a good sense of humor goes a long way in the end of the day, because sometimes when things are entering, you have to pass the time. In addition, organization is key.

Computer skills and hard work pay off. Median earnings for film and video editors average more than 46,000 dollars a year, do you think you would enjoy a career in video editing?

I get a lot of joy out of the feedback I get from other people, knowing that I have done my job and it meets and exceeds what they expected.

Awesome, I think I have learned enough from you now, so excuse me, I think I will be taking over our video.

 Okay.
