Hi guys, I am Nicole Aaron for YouniversityTV, ever wonder why a city is designed the way that it is. Well lucky for us, we are going to find out when we talk to an urban planner. 

 Urban planner, Michael Busha makes plans that affect your community. 

 Working with the citizens and working with the elected officials to try and create environments that people feel comfortable in. 

 Urban planners address the best use of a communities land by making sure it fits into the area's historical, aesthetic, and legal standards. 

 You need to really educate yourself on the sort of the origins of the community and where it was, where it is and if there is anything to read about where it is going. 

 Many urban planners days consist of traveling on site to inspect land, meet with the community, make phone calls and draft out ideas. 

 About half the time is spent in the office and the other half is spent going out and working with the towns and cities and measuring and talking to citizens. 

 A Masters degree is needed in order to be an urban planner. Michael also suggests getting an internship. 

 Every chance you get try and intern, a summer intern at any of these offices, especially where you will be allowed to draw, where you will be allowed to put together power points. 

 Working for local governments, environmental agencies and transportation departments are just a few of the different areas available for urban planners. 

 Any government level job, you know where you are working is good. Private sector like I said for lawyers, engineers, landscape architects, they all need planners. 

 Regenderfication and sustainability are becoming increasingly popular because the communities need to address these issues, urban planners are going to be in high demand. 

 I think the outlook is good. I think there are going to be good jobs for good people, good planners in this new sort of paradigm. 

 Once you are making plans for communities, you can plan on making a comfortable living. 

 If you have your Master's degree and most planners are starting between 40 and 60,000 dollars. 

 As an urban planner, there are certain skills that are necessary for the job, Michael points out that you need to be a type A personality who likes to work hard. 

 You have to want to work hard. You have to be creative. You have to, I believe have some talent to draw.
