 Hunter Publishing.

Michael Hunter is the owner and president of Hunter Publishing. What is a publisher?

A publisher is a, an intermediary between an author and the general public.

Hunter Publishing produces a wide array of travel guides. Mr. Hunter's involved in the entire process. From selecting an author and creating a book to designing a cover that will sell.

Well this is all edited, either by me or by one of my employees of, you know, the Boston office, or. And we format it. In other words, putting these illustrations in so it can move, use, using this we can move it and shrink the illustration down.

I even found a guide, just my size.

 [Inaudible].

I like these. I can put those in my.

 Those are the pocket.

 Yeah.

 Editions.

Publishers typically work in office settings and put in long hours.

As a publisher, what is your typical workweek like? How many hours are you putting in at the office, or at home working, traveling?

I usually get to the office about six thirty or seven. And I work until about six at night. And I usually put in an hour, maybe an hour at night at home. And I do that five days a week.

Depending on your position and your company's location, you may get the opportunity to travel.

But a lot of those reps meet with us in New York, we have sales meetings there. So I, I have about three or four meetings where I get up and present our new books.

Because they need to know what they're selling.

 Yeah. And hand out samples.

Mr. Hunter also meets with various companies who sell his books. So Barnes and Nobles is one of the many places people can pick up one of your guides, right?

 Correct.

 See what we have here.

Barnes and Noble, Borders, range of other stores around the country.

A four-year degree will put you on track to become a publisher. Were you reading a lot in Harvard?

Yeah, I went to Harvard and I majored in, had a joint major in art and literature.

Publishing is a smart career choice. While I society's moving from a print to digital era, publishing is changing too. Creating even more opportunities for you.

You can go to the AppStore, which is the Apple Application Store and find out books all available for download.

That's awesome, and I can get that on my phone.

 Yeah.

 While I'm in Greece.

 Yeah.

 And want to know.

 Sure.

That's. When you start out in publishing, expect to earn about 25,000 dollars a year. But don't worry, the money gets better.

Well work as a, as an editor plus for a publisher you might find yourself earning 50,000, 60,000 a year.

As for publishing company owners, like Mr. Hunter, you can expect to make plenty of money. So are you cut out to be a publisher? Creativity is key. Mr. Hunter says he's also a bit of a bookworm. Number one must love books.

 That helps, it helps.

If spending hours in a bookstore is your idea of a perfect afternoon, why not consider a career in publishing? I'm Shauna for YouniversityTV and I've got some reading to do.
