Good job, Shayna [assumed spelling]. We've got about ten more here.
Hey, guys; Shayna here, getting pumped about personal training. Personal trainer Jeremy Nelms [assumed spelling] job is all about working one on one with clients to achieve their health and fitness goals.
Well, you're doing great; we've just got a couple more minutes for the warm up.
Personal trainers assess a person's fitness level, and then design a diet and exercise program to meet their needs.
And the first thing that we're going to do is just lift our knee up as high as we can and then step forward.
What happens in the gym is just the beginning.
And do you have expectations of your clients when they're not with you in your gym here?
We do, we do. Of course, we record and write down everything while they're in the gym, but a good trainer is also going to tell the client exactly what they need to do on their days off.
While clients are in the studio, trainers also make sure they're doing exercises properly, and help them improve their technique.
And how many hours a week do you spend here?
When we're busy we can actually do up to; gosh, it can be 40, 50 hours a week.
I'm exhausted already.
A typical trainer, you're looking at from about 6:00 in the morning until about 9:00 or 10:00; just busy, non-stop. And then again from about 4:00 until 8:00, even 9:00 at night.
Before you can start working with clients, you must become certified. That can be as simple as completing an online course, but Jeremy recommends a college background.
You can get that college degree, especially again in the human sciences, and you will have an advantage over every other trainer out there, and that's the key if you truly want this to be a career.
Once you're certified, you can start your own gym, like Jeremy, or apply for a job.
What kind of job options do you have?
Gotcha. You know, there are really three different options. The first one that most people get involved with is to go to what I call a big box gym, okay? Gold's Gym, LA Fitness, Bally's; all of the big, big gyms that are out there, that have a lot of members and are really hiring quite a lot of personal trainers.
The number of personal training positions at gyms is expected to increase as more and more people become health conscious. So once you secure the job, just how much will you earn?
Most beginning personal trainers should expect to make less than $20,000, starting off.
Don't worry; it's all up from there.
You can turn this career into a six-figure career; understand that you will own your own business to make that happen.
If you genuinely care about people, personal training is about more than money. Jeremy says you have to be a cheerleader.
You've got to have a lot of energy. You are their source of energy sometimes, especially when it's early in the morning. Yes, you're doing great; you're doing great, and we're working the back muscles here.
One well-known trainer and cheerleader has helped people lose a combined three million pounds in 30 years. That's right; go, Richard Simmons!
All right, Shayna; we're going to go ahead and cool down now. I'm going to do a few stretches for you and we'll work on your flexibility, okay?
Well, that's it for me. If health and fitness are important to you, maybe personal training is in your future. I'm Shayna for YouniversityTV. See you next time.
